Golspie Overnight Campervan Stays - Free and Allowed

A Secret Overnight Spot Hidden in the Sand Dunes...

On the east coast of Scotland, tucked away into a little peninsula this has to be one of the quietest and most remote beach spots we have found on our vanlife travels around Scotland. With a long sandy beach teaming with wildlife, forest walks and sand dunes this is both a nature lover and wildlife watcher's dream. Whilst there is also a car park closer to town (at £12.50 a night) we prefer to escape the hustle and bustle which this spot offers. With one-night authorised stays from the local council, this is a spot you won't want to miss.
Funnily enough on park4night, the description for this spot describes it as not the prettiest of places which just goes to show the value of us sharing these spots with you as that could not be further from the truth.
As you drive passed Golspie town/village you follow the road which runs along the side of the golf course into the trees. Heading down this road you will pass a number of laybys, please don't be tempted to park in then when there is a designated spot further down just waiting for you.
Pulling off the road into the carpark (what3words:///hacksaw.steepest.pairings ) you are surrounded by sand dunes with a forest to your left which is full of deer! I mean a beach and deer watching right from your park up, what more do you need?
The spot itself is facility-free aside from a bin so be prepared to come self-contained.
The sand dunes which surround the car park make for a fantastic walk, you will even find a rope swing smack bang in the middle which young or old, is always so much fun. Heading over the dunes though is where this truly wild spot comes into its own with a huge sandy beach to explore you can expect to see Seals in their plentiful as they bob up and down on the entry to the estuary.
This area is teeming in wildlife so its highly recommended to keep your dog on a lead if they like to bound off as you will see for yourself, there are animals around every corner.
When night falls you will hear the hoot of owls right from your overnight parking spot and if you are lucky enough like we were you will even be able to spot one in the trees if you decide to take a dusk stroll through the woods.
It's amazing what you miss in Scotland if you head straight to the NC500, so make sure you don't miss this blissful park up tucked into the East Coast of Scotland.

We hope you enjoy it!

A secret we had to share, this beachside overnight spot has been a firm favourite of ours for years. With beautiful sea views, a long sandy beach, facilities and three colour-guided walks, as with most spots we share this is more than just an overnight parking spot. Let's start with the parking and facilities before we share the rest of the riches this spot has to offer. The car park itself is a mixture of flat-level grass and gravel, offering bay parking overlooking the ocean with the shade of trees, giving this a really wild diverse feel. Along the bay front you will find plenty of picnic benches to enjoy alongside 24-hour toilets and bins at the entrance. Part of the forestry commission for Scotland's ‘stay the night’ scheme it only costs £7 to park overnight, given the fact there aren't any local businesses to support in the vicinity of the car park this provides a great way to give back. The water itself is a fabulous wild swimming spot with beautifully clear waters. Or for those not brave enough, a sandy beach on which to sit and seal spot, we have seen many a bobbing head which makes this a wildlife watchers haven. If you have more energy or a dog that needs walking like us then you are spoiled for choice with not one, not two, but three colour guided walks including the addition of a 7.6km path which leads you all the way to Carrick Castle. The green coloured walk will take you along the waters edge of Glenfinart Burn with a variety of trees straight above as your shelter. This walk is 1.3km long, entirely flat and will take you approximately half an hour. Alternatively if you want something a little further with expansive views then you can choose from either the red or yellow colour graded walks, both with some hills to climb which result in breath taking views from high above. The red birchwood trail is 1.6km and will take you approximately 45 mins, the yellow Lairds trail is the furthers at 3.3k and will take you approximately 1 hour. Having walked all three trails we can highly recommend them all. With so many people heading straight to the NC500 these magical little gems are often missed, don't make the same mistake! This is a spot you have to add to your vanlife adventures, trust me you won't be disappointed. Don't forget to check out or other posts, where we share some of the best overnight vanlife spots we've discovered on our travels around the UK. We hope you enjoy!

Published: October 2024 Overnight parking by the beach is a vanlife dream, with very few campsites offering the same views and opportunity we are sharing our favourite spots all with ‘allowed’ overnight parking to not only give you peace of mind but also a cost-effective way to enjoy the magical coastal spots in Scotland. Starting in the South of Scotland we recently discovered one of our favourite beach side overnight parking spots, a breathtaking seaside setting, the Isle of Whithorn. Driving through the little harbour village to the end of the peninsula you will find a huge level car park owned by the Steampacket Inn which you pass on your way through only minutes before arriving at the car park. Here you are welcomed to park up overnight and truly enjoy all this little spot has to offer. When we stayed we were joined by fellow campervanners including cyclists who had pitched tents further back on the grass for the evening. Rich in history this spot offers not only expansive ocean views but so much to see and do, much more than you would expect from such a quaint little harbour. First let's cover where you stay then we will take you onto what you can do. Recently levelled with a gravel base, you will find both flat and plentiful parking. The car park has plenty of huge wheelie bins for both general waste and recycling, which as we all know is a huge plus when travelling in a van…rubbish really does build up, doesn't it! Just outside the car park you will also find, a fresh drinking water tap, a FREE chemical waste disposal point for your toilet, along with a singular 24-hour toilet for those without facilities. All the facilities you could need when travelling in your van around Scotland. Now we have to talk about the pub itself, without which this stay wouldn't be possible. The Steam Packet Inn is a traditional family owned village pub with two bars and outside harbourside seating. To ensure the continued use of this overnight spot we highly recommend a visit to the pub as a way to pay back for your stay. They offer an extensive menu which is fairly priced and the quality second to none. Plus incredible portion sizes which give exceptional value. I mean where else can you get an open lobster sandwich right by the sea for only £9! It has to be said though the jewel in the crown for us has to be the in-house micro brewed range of ales they sell both in the Pub and available as bottles or cans to take away. We tried a few whilst we stayed but the Summer Isle was our favourite. If you want more then sea views and a stunning pub visit then don't worry, there is even more to enjoy. From the carpark you only have to wonder a minute away for an almost 360 degree ocean view. With two bays directly opposite each other this is one of the only overnight spots we have found that offers beaches on both sides. If you enjoy cold water swimming, fishing or sea glass collecting, then you have found your heaven. Alongside these natural delights you will also find St Ninians Chapel built in 1100 where you walk in the steps of hundreds of pilgrims from years before. In part ruin this chapel still holds the magical feeling left behind by all those who have passed through before. Rich in history the St Ninian chapel was built for not only local worshippers but also to serve as a resting place for pilgrims on their way through to the St Ninian shrine in Whithorn itself. St Ninian was Scotland's first saint who brought Christianity to Scotland way back in 397, dying in 431, Whithorn became his final resting place. To truly immerse yourself in the historically religious spot there exists a modern witness cairn where pilgrams and visitors are invited to leave stones which many have done in their hundreds. With either messages for those passed on or affirmations for what will be this sacred spot holds a feeling you often only read about in books. Christian or not, a prayer feels like it holds power in this sacred space. Isle of Whithorn is more then just an overnight spot, its a whole adventure for the eyes, feet, heart and mind. We hope you enjoy and make sure to check out our other posts for more amazing overnight spots not just in Scotland but across the whole of the UK.

The New Forest in Hampshire is a mystical, sprawling woodland, full of life and tradition. Among its time-honoured customs, one of the many reasons we love the New Forest is the free roaming animals. They are literally everywhere in the New Forest. From the countryside to the towns and villages. But once a year a very special event happens. None is quite as captivating as pannage—the ancient practice of releasing domestic pigs into the forest to forage for acorns, chestnuts, and beechmast. This practice dates back to the time of William the Conqueror in 1079 and remains an essential part of the forest's delicate ecosystem today. For those visiting during the pannage season, the sight of pigs meandering through the trees is both charming and steeped in centuries of history.

It feels like we discovered one of Scotland's best kept secrets. You wouldn't believe these beautiful falls hide behind a little Scottish village in the Highlands. Only a ten minute walk through the woods that creates the back drop of this village in the mountains you will find the grey mares tail waterfall. With a wooden walkway and climbing ropes you are able to walk straight to the falls and suspend yourself above the water as it rushes beneath you. Truly a magical feeling. Discovering gems like this are why we love Scotland so much, there's so much more to discover then you could ever realise. The fact that Kinlochleven has also now opened an aire allowing overnight stays for motorhomes and campervans (with EHU) makes it the perfect place to explore.
After visiting and googling to find out more information we also learned that Kinlochleven was the first village in the world to have every house connected to electricity! How incredible is that!!
We didn't even know these falls existed when we planned our stop on the village over night so wanted to share with you so that you too could experience this little hidden gem 🚐❤️

Selling everything we owned at 40 and moving into our tiny campervan Old Gertie felt like a huge risk but also an opportunity we couldn't miss out on.
Life moves so fast, moments becoming memories before you've even reminded yourself to experience them. In a world that propels you forward, paced to race to the finish we wanted to find a way to slow it all down. To experience more. Going backwards felt like a great way to try. Starting from scratch with a map of experiences to gather over a spreadsheet of targets. Sure maybe we should have chosen to start saving or investing. That's what grown ups do right? Adulting. Preparing. For a tomorrow, down the road, that might never come.
BUT we don't want tomorrow to be our happy place, we want that today.
Living simply plants you back into the moment in so many ways. Everyday, every moment, it's an experience.
So living Vanlife we might not be rich in the material sense but we feel like we are truly living 🚐🫶🏼and that's a wealth no one can take away from you.
As they say...you only live once.
Waking up to a new adventure 🚐☀️☕ You always know how the day starts, but never how it will go—or where it will end. At first, that uncertainty can feel scary, but once you lean into it, freedom like this will feel unbelievable.
Vanlife teaches you to live fully in the moment—and that’s where the real magic hides. ✨
Old Gertie 🚐❤️
“Don’t you realise how lucky we are?” ❄️🚐✨
Winter vanlife in the UK isn’t rubbish — it’s quietly, breathtakingly beautiful. There’s a soft romance in watching the world shift through our campervan windows, in seeing the seasons repaint the landscape in their own time. Frosted fields, misty mornings, moody skies… winter turns everything into poetry if you slow down long enough to notice.
Out here, the cold doesn’t just test us — it shapes us. It asks us to bundle closer, breathe deeper, listen more. Wrapped in blankets, sharing warm mugs with cold hands, we realise just how fortunate we are to witness nature’s quiet magic from the heart of our tiny rolling home.
Some days the world feels silver and hushed. Other days it feels wild and alive. But every day reminds us that beauty isn’t always warm or easy — sometimes it whispers instead of shouts. And those whispers, those gentle lessons in resilience and gratitude, are what make us stronger.
To grow through the seasons.
To love through the challenges.
To find wonder in the simplest moments.
That’s the real gift of winter vanlife.
And truly… how lucky we are. 🤍🚐❄️
When we first chose life on the road, we didn’t know what to expect. We traded square footage for freedom, routines for spontaneity, and comfort zones for open roads. Now, every day in our campervan feels like a chapter in a story we didn’t even know we were brave enough to write.
We’ve learned to slow down long enough to hear our thoughts again. We’ve learned that getting lost usually means discovering something we never would have found on a map.
Van life isn’t perfect—our home rattles, the weather surprises us, and some nights the closest thing we get to warmth is from candle light. But that’s the beauty of it. These unpolished moments become the memories we talk about the longest. They’re the moments that make us feel alive.
This journey is about choosing experiences over expectations, presence over pressure, and storytelling over perfection. And with every sunrise we chase, every hidden campsite we find, and every quiet night under a sky full of stars, we’re reminded that this lifestyle is our greatest teacher.
When the goal is experience, everything becomes a win — the adventures, the challenges, the stillness, the surprises. And we’re grateful for all of it. 🤍✨🚐
Cosy for Christmas 🚐🎄❄️She may be little but she packs a festive punch. Living in a campervan through the winter can look like madness from the outside but once you step inside it all makes sense. More fairy lights than anyone needs, every candle and lamp lit. Cosy blankets and fluffy slippers. Old Gertie is proof that you don't need much to make a home. We even have a Christmas tree that fits snuggly on a shelf. With each winter spent in Old Gertie we are reminded that this life is so much more than just adventures. It's the experiences which make it just as magical and with each season we learn to be that bit more grateful for everything we have.
Happy 1st December 🚐🎄🫶🏼✨
Living in a campervan can look like a life of living with less when in fact you have so much more. Being grateful for the simple things changes your perspective. You learn to appreciate everything you once took for granted. It creates a rich life that's not built on monetary value instead it's a vault load of moments that build it's worth. An ever changing back garden, forever a different view. Its priceless.
Back south for Christmas we feel so lucky that although we get to live wherever we want, our little home on wheels means we never have to miss out on moments with those who mean the most ❤️ and Today we have been decorating Old Gertie in her full festive set up which we can't wait to share with you all tomorrow 🎄
We hope you've all had a lovely Saturday wherever you are and what ever you are doing 🫶🏼🚐
What's it like? We are going to show you 🚐❄️After spending the most amazing four weeks in Scotland we have driven Old Gertie the 400 miles back down South for Christmas. Living in a van isn't just about travel for us. This is real Vanlife. No route. No plans. No where to be and everywhere to go...winter Vanlife in Old Gertie. Over December we plan on using our Britstops membership to find some cosy, log fired, Christmas themed stop overs whilst mixing it up with some of our favourite low campsites and wild parking spots. We also intend on using our National Trust membership to visit as many locations as we can...their Christmas displays are always epic and it's become a bit of a tradition for us now.
Leave a little heart in the comments if your excited to follow our adventures as we are to share them with you ❤️🚐🫶🏼
Winter vanlife, here we go again! ❄️ This will be our third winter living full-time in Old Gertie, and Scotland has already thrown us straight into minus temps, snowy mornings, and a cheeky heater breakdown 😂🙈
With only one gas bottle onboard, it’s basically winter vanlife roulette—of course it ran out right in the middle of the evening. So last night’s “heating system” was candles (CO₂ monitor always on!) and a mountain of blankets. Top tip: candles under a kettle actually give you hot water in 40 minutes… meaning we still got our morning coffee, which tasted even better today ☕️🔥
I’m finally in the swing of sharing our winter vanlife adventures more regularly, so come along as we live, travel, and explore the UK in our trusty old campervan. I’ll be posting our daily routines, cozy winter hacks, travel spots, and real behind-the-scenes moments from life on the road. Here’s to frosty mornings, cold-weather challenges, and making the warmest memories in our little rolling home 🫶🏼🚐✨

Sharing Vanlife secrets… although let’s be honest, it’s not really a secret 🤣 You just don’t know these places exist until some overly enthusiastic van dweller (hi, that’s me 🙋♀️) tells you.
This spot is yet another gem from Forestry and Land Scotland, who kindly let you park overnight for £10—an absolute bargain considering the waterfall-front property vibes. You even get picnic benches right beside the falls, perfect if you fancy a wet bottom and a warm soup at the same time 😉 Truly the height of luxury, we jest but it's true for those like minded travellers.
There are three walks starting right from your doorstep (vanstep?), and Loch Trool is so close it feels like it should be paying rent. The loop walk takes us about three hours, but honestly you barely notice—Mother Nature keeps changing the scenery like she’s auditioning for a travel brochure. By the time your legs realise they’re tired, you’re already back at the van pretending you’re athletic.
Easily one of our favourite spots… although yes, yes, we say that a lot. Vanlife makes us emotionally unstable like that 🤣
If you’re heading to Scotland in your motorhome or campervan, add this place to your wild camping list. Your future self will thank you 🚐🫶🏼

Only in Scotland could you stumble across a waterfall so dramatic that it somehow never made it onto any map. Most people arriving at the Woods of Cree (RSPB carpark) follow the main trail, but if you leave the car park and wander left for a few minutes, the sound of rushing water starts to rise from the forest. A small gap in the trees reveals a hidden cascade that feels like your own private corner of the wild.
Unmapped, peaceful and completely untouched, it’s the kind of place that reminds us why exploring the UK by campervan feels so special. These off-track discoveries, the quiet moments in nature, the unexpected beauty around the next bend—this is the real magic of vanlife in the UK. A perfect reminder of why we chose this life, and why Scotland continues to surprise us at every turn.
Sharing these hidden gems with those who crave nature as much as us is exactly why we have this channel, we hope you find joy in these moments and locations as much as we do 🫶🏼🚐
Exploring Scotland in a campervan has been the kind of journey that reminds us why slow travel is worth every mile. Waking up beside quiet lochs, driving through the rugged Highlands of Scotland or exploring the south. Watching the landscape shift from dramatic cliffs to peaceful glens makes a Scotland road trip feel endlessly rewarding. Traveling the SW300 and the NC500 gives you access to winding coastal roads, historic castles, hidden beaches, and the remote beauty that defines true Scotland travel. Don't know where to start? Don't forget we sell our Scotland map for only £12.99 with over 600 pins on where to stay/visit and all the facilities you need to plan your own campervan roadtrip.
Campervan life in Scotland offers the freedom to pause wherever the scenery demands your attention—whether it’s a serene Highland viewpoint, an ancient forest trail, or a windswept stretch of coastline. It feels like the most authentic way to explore Scotland, especially for anyone who enjoys van life, outdoor adventure, and discovering off-the-beaten-path locations.
If you’re planning to visit Scotland, experiencing it through campervan travel is one of the most memorable ways to immerse yourself in the landscape (in our opinion ☺️) From small villages to dramatic mountain passes, every moment underscores why so many travellers consider campervan Scotland journeys to be the ultimate way to explore this remarkable country.
So let this be your sign...what are you waiting for 🚐🏴🫶🏼
Happy Saturday Folks!!
43 years Old, living Vanlife in a 36 year old campervan. Currently in Scotland 📍🚐. Who said life has to be boring. To think we've been in Scotland less then a month and already seen so much. Life should be an adventure...if you agree then why not follow along on ours. Hopefully it will give you some inspiration for your own travels around the UK 🫶🏼🚐
Vanlife in Scotland is magical when it snows ❄️Just when we thought we were heading into the sunshine, we found snow instead. Parking overnight in the Bridge of Orchy forestry carpark we had the whole spot to ourselves. Some of the reviews mentioned being able to hear the road as the A82 runs not far away, however we had such a peaceful night. £13 as there is a black waste point, parked up next to the roaring river and surrounded by trees we could have stayed longer. However as much as we love the Snow, Old Gertie isn't such a fan. With her little gas heater being temperamental we didn't want to risk our luck so headed for the Drovers Inn. They are more than happy for you to park overnight in the carpark, I should mention they have an epic waterfall to view from there. The staff are so friendly and the pub an eccentric, eclectic, cosy vibe. Highly recommend it. Just past the Falls of Falloch as you drive south it's easy to miss so add it to your travel list.
One day with a better insulated campervan and a more reliable heating system we want to explore the Highlands in the snowy weather but for now we have to be kind to the old girl so are heading to explore back in the South...we might even head back to the spot we got engaged all those years ago, any guesses where?
As always lots of love from Old Gertie and the Gang 🚐🫶🏼
We had no idea when heading to the Kinlochleven Aire that would be in for such a surprise. Firstly the Aire itself is fab, a community incentive which means all the money goes back into the area. It's £20 a night with electric hookup, drinking water, toilets and a elsan point for your chemical toilet. Parking in the heart of the village next to the water we had thought this would be a great spot to reset and recharge.
However you know us, we always love to go for a wander and on crossing the bridge saw a sign opposite the pub for the grey mares waterfall. Walking up the road the path soon changed to woodlands that trekked behind the houses. Following the path slightly uphill then straight down some steps and across a bridge we couldn't believe what we found. Hidden behind this little village in the mountains of Scotland is not only the most breathtaking waterfall but also a course of ropes, blanks and wall hooks which means you can traverse along the edge until you are suspended above the water below you, directly facing the waterfall. I could feel the water on my face! Breathtaking.
Just goes to show you, you really never know what could be just around the corner.
If you are exploring Scotland in your motorhome or campervan then make sure you add this spot to your travel plans, it's one not to be missed.
Was it worth it? Part 17 of our Campervan adventures around Scotland in our 36 year old campervan, Old Gertie.
Hiking a trail we've wanted to walk so many times but the weather wouldn't allow it...a blue sky day felt like the perfect time. Now Im sure there are lots of seasoned climbers/hikers out there who will think I'm being a wuss. However if you are scared of heights like me then I feel this is a far better review then the ones I read online before heading off.
The path is steep in places with sheer drops so be prepared and if it's icy or snowy I wouldnt even try it! However when the conditions are right, wow, this is a hike so worth the fear. Climbing around 350 metres you come to the Lost Valley. Words can't describe how beautiful it was and video just doesn't do it justice. I recommend reading about the history of this glen before setting off as it makes the atmosphere feel so much more weighted in history alongside its natural beauty.
This is exactly the reason we love exploring Scotland in a campervan. We have camped around the Glencoe area for a few nights waiting for the perfect day to make the climb, something that wouldn't be possible if you were just passing though.
Have you walked to the lost valley? Am I being a big ole wimp? Be honest, I feel the comments will only help give a full review for those who want to give it a go.
Looking forward to sharing where our Vanlife adventures take us next, we have a hidden gem that I don't think anyone will expect...but that's a story for tomorrow.
Lots of love 🚐🫶🏼
And It's been perfect ❤️🏴 Vanlife Adventures are the absolute best but sometimes you can forget to take the time to just do nothing. We've had a lazy morning, followed by a slow sunny walk, finished off with a little sup on some local ales. Just what we needed, it's been lovely.
Our bodies needed the rest after yesterday's hike which we cant wait to share with you all tomorrow but for now, we've just opened a bottle of red and are about to cook some dinner and settle down to another evening of Shetland. We are late to the game so currently binge watching the series ☺️
We hope everyone is having a lovely weekend whatever you are doing, wherever you are 🫶🏼and we shall see you all tomorrow for part 17 of Vanlife in Scotland...it's going to be a great one 🚐❤️
Glencoe is easily one of our favourite places to explore in Scotland...but I feel we've said that everywhere we've been 🙈 Popular for Vanlife and it's so easy to see. Parked up in amongst the mountains it's truly a breath taking place.
Waking up next to the river Coe was the perfect way to start the day. They've laid a new path since we were last here which means you can follow the river and all it's waterfalls in a nice little loop walk. Our plan today was to get gas as the weather has started to get chiller and we wanted to use our heater...little did we know its broken. Ouch 🙈🤣Hey ho, we have blankets and candles...although anyone well versed in these old gas fires, we would welcome any advice!
West highland gas is the place to go when you are up this way in your motorhome or campervan. Colin is just the loveliest chap and with such reasonably priced gas! It can get quite expensive in Scotland so good one to add to your travel itenary.
Tomorrow we are sharing with you a hike we have wanted to do for a long time but have put off for various reasons. However it's meant to be a clear sky day so we need to make the most of it 🤞🏼
See you tomorrow guys 🚐🫶🏼
Top tips if you are travelling to the Scottish Highlands in your motorhome or campervan...there are washing machines and dryers at the green welly store, make sure you take cash, super handy big drums. Which for us living Vanlife are perfect as everything we own, including bedding fits in one drum! Now we do have a shower in Old Gertie which we use however it's always a shower of need over a shower of luxury. With limited water and a waste tank then filling up, even the simple things in Vanlife take more effort. That's why we love the showers at Glencoe mountain resort. £1 for 5 minutes (I treated myself to a whole 15 minutes which felt like an absolute luxury) they are super hot and have great pressure. The whole shower block is heated so no freezing your tootsies off when you get out. They even have a drying room which is free to use so no need to take damp wet towels back to the van.
Sorry it not been such a fun day in the life today but there's always a balance to the adventure and today was one of those. Still not a bad life hey, showering in the mountains is pretty epic right!
On to find a spot for tonight but that we will share with you all tomorrow.

Part 14 of Vanlife in Scotland, 2 amazing motorhome/campervan overnight spots and 1 place you won't want to miss on your roadtrip in this stunningly beautiful country.
Scotland you have our hearts ❤️🏴this road trip just gets better and better. Revisiting fab overnight spots like Loch Lomond (we park at the visitor centre) and breathtaking waterfalls like the Falls of Falloch. Then discovering new places to stay thanks to the Forestry Land Scotland, with their Strone Hill carpark. £10 overnight and £5 if you just want to use the chemical waste point.
The weather is turning but it doesn't make a difference to us. The autumnal colours are breathtaking and quite honestly there is nothing I love more then a rainy walk followed by a cosy evening in the van. Makes you grateful for the little things 🫶🏼
Cullen Skink was a big hit, we will definitely be making that again...I highly recommend it if you haven't tried it. So simple, so hearty, just delicious.
Our adventures have continued North and we will of course be sharing all our adventures with you guys so make sure you tune in tomorrow.
For those not sick of me and my voice 🤣we also have a new Youtube episode going out tomorrow if you wanted to catch that, 6pm.
We hope you are enjoying our Vanlife travels in Old Gertie and that some of our tips will help of you plan on visiting Scotland.
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🚐🫶🏼
You can't come to Scotland and not try Irn Bru. We got it wrong the first time and picked up an Aldi version which we were told and can now confirm doesn't compare. We were recommended the vintage and...well I would tell you how it tastes but people aren't wrong when they say it's impossible to describe. Touted as an incredible hangover cure (yet to be tested 🤣) and even outsells coca cola here in Scotland...it's a drink you have to try.
That's what I love most about travelling around in a campervan, you get to take your kitchen with you. The amount of Scottish treats we have packed in our fridge and cupboard I can't tell you 🤗
What else do you recommend we try whilst we are here?
Back to our regular daily adventures tomorrow so stay posted for some amazing spots and a visit you won't want to miss!
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🚐🫶🏼
We are sharing our daily adventures as we travel around Scotland in our 36 year old campervan. If you want to follow along on our roadtrip then why not join our little community and follow along.
Old Gertie is a 36 year old Talbot express and has been our tiny home on wheels for the past almost three years. Proving daily they don't make them like they used too. Together with our dog Frank and our car Murphy we are exploring all the hidden gems of the UK and sharing them with you.
Want to know what a day in the life has in store for us, with amazing places to park overnight and visit in the day? Then we've got you covered. We hope you enjoy the journey as much as we are 🚐🫶🏼
Vanlife in the UK truly shines when you visit Scotland, another amazing overnight spot. Craufurland Castle Estate allows overnight parking for £10 a night which is then kindly redeemable in their café for breakfast or lunch. What I didn't add (as I seem to be making these reels longer and longer 🤣) is that we got super lucky on our stay. The cafe was open for a private dinner and firework display which we got to enjoy only steps from our campervan. There's a lovely loop walk around the estate or you can also take the path straight into Fenwick, it was about 3/4 mile. A peaceful night on level parking overlooking the lake, ideal for all size campervans or motorhomes.
However it was time to head further north and we wanted to get past Glasgow which can be a tricky drive...especially after being used to the peaceful traffic free roads weve experienced so far.
Loch Lomond is one of our favourite spots, having been a place we stopped many times before. We know it can get busy in the more touristy months so maybe an idea to avoid then however this time of year it's so peaceful and calm. We were the only campervan all night. However I will share more from this spot tomorrow. I'm a day or two behind in these reels so can already tell you, this roadtrip just gets better and better.
We really hope these daily reels help you on your campervan or motorhome adventures around Scotland and for everyone who lives here...we hope we are doing it justice 🏴🚐❤️
Happy Monday everyone!
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🚐🫶🏼
Because sometimes it's the silly little moments that make the best memories. Today we drove through the rain to find some sunshine and find it we did ☺️(maybe my singing helped 🤣) Little wins that can fall into the forgotten archives are the ones we try to celebrate the most and I wanted to share this moment with you all...as embarrassing as it maybe 🙈I hope it reminds you to celebrate every little win, be hopeful without expectation and be grateful for everything you have.
That's got to be the biggest lesson this simple campervan lifestyle has taught us and one I wanted to share with you all 🫶🏼
I hope you have all had a wonderful weekend and thank you as always for being on this crazy ride with us. Tomorrow we will resume normal Vanlife daily reels filled with places to stay and locations to explore in your motorhome or campervan in Scotland.
But for now...
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and The Gang 🚐🫶🏼
'Ker coo bree' how am I still saying it wrong, and to think I even applauded myself 🙈all I can do is apologise at this point 😂Thank you to those who helped me with the pronunciation and for those it annoyed...my advice, don't sweat the small stuff 🤗
Exploring Scotland in your campervan really is a dream, we went from a full service Aire to somewhere so remote we couldn't even get phone signal! The variation is just amazing.
We did try a bit of cold water paddling and man alive that was cold! Shout out to all you cold water swimmers out there.
Loch Doon was stunning and the Loch Doon Castle fascinating. They actually moved the castle in the 30's to allow for a hydro project and rebuilt it stone by stone where it stands now.
However as much as it is wonderful camping off grid that does limit how much of our van life adventures we can share with you guys so we hit up our Britstops app to find out next spot. It's also on park4night so inclusive to everyone in a campervan or motorhome but I will share this spot with you all tomorrow.
For now we are off to enjoy the private fireworks display, we hope you are all having a lovely weekend and we will see you tomorrow.
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🚐🫶🏼
Not a usual overnight spot for us in Old Gertie but these Aires are great when you want to explore the local area. Plus the money you pay to stay not only gives you access to electric and water, it also goes straight back into supporting the community swimming pool so a winner all round.
You guys know that when in Scotland in our lil ole campervan we are 99% of the time trundling from one epic nature spot to the next. However we needed electricity (solar is scarce at the moment 🌧️) so took advantage of the location and went to find out what a little Scottish harbour town was like.
Rich in history there is a castle and a number of churches along with a varied collection of shops and quaint old houses. Sadly we couldn't get a takeaway Cullen Skink which is something we've wanted to try however we did get an epic haul from the bakers...I will share that tomorrow.
A slightly different stopover for you guys today but I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did BUT nature is calling and we are off...where too? Well you will have to tune in tomorrow to find out.
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🚐🫶🏼
For those that are new here, we are Trist and Kez and for the past almost three years we have been exploring the UK in our little home on wheels. A 36 year old Talbot express campervan called Old Gertie. We are currently in Scotland, sharing our adventures and overnight camping spots with you. We've been in the South West of Scotland for over a week now and keep finding amazing reasons not to leave. Proof there is more to Scotland then the NC500. If you have a campervan or motorhome or simply an enthusiast or just a lover of Scotland then why not join our roadtrip adventures and follow along 🏴❤️
We don't do it like the rest 🤣 We don't have a motorhome or a self converted van. Three years ago we just brought a 36 year old campervan, sold everything we owned and hit the road to explore the wilds of the UK. We are currently in Scotland and Old Gertie made it in two days driving 400 miles in 10 hours costing about £100 in petrol...leaving the south coast of England.
So if you want to know what Vanlife in the UK is like, living and travelling in an old campervan then why not follow along. We share lots of places to stay and visit proving that you really dont need much to find magic on the road!
Take it from us, if you are travelling to Scotland in your motorhome or campervan and you rush straight to the start of the NC500 then you will miss all the magic. We've been in the South West of Scotland for over a week now and keep discovering reasons not to leave. Be it incredible park ups, from contribution based campsites, allowed overnight forestry carparks or local business incentives. Or just the incredible locations they are in. We can't leave!
Loch Trool visitor centre was our most recent stay, another of the forestry land Scotland carparks. Positioned next to the most incredible waterfall it seemed only right to get wet bums enjoying a warm winter picnic. Great fuel for the 10k hike around Loch Trool. It's a circular walk that takes just over 3 hours, all around the loch right up to Bruces stone. Loch Trool was the location of the famous battle of Glentrool with lots of history to learn on the way round.
However today has been spent mostly working which meant we have run out batteries very low and without a glimpse of sun our solar just isn't cutting it. Thankfully Scotland is well equipped for Vanlife and we have found an aire that has electric hook up for just £15 a night which we shall share with you all tomorrow.
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🫶🏼🚐
At the end all we have is our memories 🫶🏼 There are so many reasons we love Vanlife. None are that grand, it's all the simple little moments that create the magic for us.
A winter picnic of warm hot soup, sat on a wet bench in the rain, with a waterfall as our sight and sound...priceless 🙌🏽
Its in the stillness between destinations, weve learned that freedom isn’t about how far we travel its about embracing the wilds and knowing you belong wherever you are.
Slow travel, small living, simple life.
P.S Taking today to just soak up this past weeks worth of adventuring around Scotland in Old Gertie our ever faithful 36 year old home on wheels, normal service will resume tomorrow ❤️
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🫶🏼🚐
There is more to Scotland than the NC500 so make sure you don't rush or you might miss the magic. The Woods of Cree is a must on your campervan or motorhome adventures or to be fair any roadtrip in any vehicle. There are two carparks along this stretch of road, we always head to the RSBP wood of Cree carpark as the loop walk through the woods and up into the hills is one of our favourites. The woodland trail takes you through the woods and past countless waterfalls but if you want to wander that little bit further and take in breathtaking views then you can add the shrub trail to your hike which extends the loop. Both signposted walks with fascinating facts about the ancient oak woodlands as you explore. However sometimes the best finds are the hidden gems you find when you stray off the well beaten path...which is how we feel about the waterfall we went too this morning. A short wander down the road, you just have to follow the sound, you will stumble across the most epic falls. Standing close you can feel the water all over your face, now that's how we love to wake up! Heading onwards we have some errands to run but where we are going next offers a level up to where we've been before...if that is even possible. In Trits words, it's spectacular so make sure you are following along on our Vanlife travels around Scotland and we shall see you tomorrow.
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🫶🏼🚐
One of our favourite overnight spots when in Scotland, it's a little Vanlife haven. Parking in the huge carpark at the end of the Isle of Whithorn peninsula, offered so generously by the Steam Packet Inn. A family run pub serving their own micro brewed Ales or delicious freshly caught, locally sourced food. All they ask in return is a contribution for your stay or to use the pub which we highly recommend. There is even a water point, bins, an elsan point and a toilet! The area itself is steeped in history being a key point in pilgrimages from time gone by. A must stop spot to add to your campervan adventures when in Scotland.
After a lovely meal out, a beautiful walk and a peaceful night by the sea it's time to head forward on our road trip...where to next? You will have to tune in tomorrow to find out ☺️
Happy Sunday beautiful people 🙌🏽
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🚐🫶🏼
This definitely felt like a VIP motorhome stay 🚐🫶🏼
We left our spot at the otters pool and headed to Clatteringshaws, whilst you can stay overnight we choose not to as the winds were increasing and we needed to find somewhere a bit more sheltered. Which we found at the Red Deer Range 🙌🏽another carpark opened by Forestry land of Scotland for a £10 charge to stay overnight in your self contained motorhome or campervan. We were the only ones all night and all morning which quite honestly made it feel like a VIP stay. Make sure you are stocked up with apples or carrots when you visit as the deer come straight to the hatch awaiting their treats.
However with very limited signal and work to do we decided to head to one of our favourite spots here in the South of Scotland, the Isle of Whithorn. Overnight parking is contribution based and allowed by the Steam packet inn who own the carpark. Parking is right at the end of the harbour with the sea all around you. The carpark is huge and hard standing which is perfect in these wetter months as driving onto grass would be near on impossible.
The Steam packet inn is a lovely little family run pub which serves its own micro brewed ales which are absolutely delicious. The plan is to head there this evening for dinner, but first a walk around the stunning headland which is filled with stories of years gone by....but that will have to wait until tomorrow ☺️
We hope you are all having a lovely Saturday wherever you are and whatever you are doing!
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🫶🏼🚐
Well that was a hairy drive! We've driven Raiders Road before but had clearly forgotten what a rattly ride it is 🙈 A beautiful drive, it's just such a shame the road is in such poor condition, the pot holes are dangerous...especially in a 36 year old campervan. It felt like she was going to rattle apart 🤣but as always, the old girl pulled it off and it was worth it! We've visited the Otter pools before when it was day parking only however this year it's been open for overnight stays. The Forestry and Land Scotland open a number of their carparks for overnight parking in your camper as part of their stay the night scheme and rotate these periodically. To be able to stay in such an incredible spot for only £10 a night was amazing. 24 hour toilets are a nice bonus. However the jewel of this stay is the remote location, you feel totally within the wilds with nothing but the sights and sounds of nature all around. We were lucky to be the only van for the whole night so we had the entire place to ourselves ☺️. Lucky for us but unfortunately for you guys raiders road closes from November to March but certainly one to add to your Scotland adventures in your campervan or motorhome for next year.
We swung through Dumfries for supplies but didn't explore, we will be doing some more towns on this trip but the pull of nature has been too strong so far.
After raiders road we headed to Clatteringshaws but the rest is a story for tomorrow.
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🚐🫶🏼
The views you get from your bed in a campervan are one of the reasons we love Vanlife so much! It's like an ever changing portrait to enjoy and wow, does Scotland have some landscapes 🏴❤️
Im sorry there isn't a reel today guys, it's edited and ready to go however signal is very weak where we are parked up and it doesn't want to load! As soon as we move on tomorrow I will make sure I get it uploaded for you as we have had another cracking 24 hours and I can wait to share it with you all.
For now, the rain has moved in but we are keeping super snug inside Old Gertie. The blankets are out and the candles are on, snug as a bug in a rug as they say☺️
We also have a vlog scheduled to go out tonight at 6pm over on YouTube so if you want to come along for the journey with us as we travelled to Scotland then why not check it out. We are both still super proud of this old 36 year old campervan driving 400 miles and at only a cost of £110 on fuel that's not bad for the ole girl.
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🫶🏼🚐
What a hike! The reviews say it takes 15 minutes...they are lying 🤣To walk to the Waterloo Monument is a near vertical ascent of 175m and the path is very slippery this time of year, yep I fell over of course 🙈 The view from the top is breathtaking and death defying as the winding stairs take you straight to the top with zero walls around the edge!
We parked overnight at Sweetheart Abbey and walked through the village to get to the start of the climb. Exhausting but well worth the hiking adventure.
Unfortunately the abbey was closed when we stayed but still a peaceful night's sleep ready to head onto our next adventure. We have a slightly longer drive today, just over an hour but it's a spot we know you are all going to love.
I hope that by sharing some of these spots or helps fuels your own Vanlife adventures around Scotland in your campervan or motorhome and remember if Old Gertie can do it, then anyone can ☺️
See you tomorrow 👏🏼
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🚐🫶🏼
Slow travel at its finest we ended up only 10 minutes down the road from our last overnight spot. Glencaple community contribution carpark allows 5/6 motorhomes to park overnight overlooking the waters edge.
We've been guilty of overlooking this spot before as we couldn't see any walks around the area...we were wrong. You can follow a footpath all the way along the waters edge for miles! It's such a peaceful spot with only a handful of houses behind you, a cafe overlooking the water and pub serving lunch and evening meals.
We chose to enjoy the elements and sat out for a glass of wine in the evening under the path of hundreds of migrating geese. We even had a solo vanlifer join us to share stories of Scotland travels...time is a priceless form of kindness and connection such an important thing in today's hectic world.
However its time to move on and we have an exciting/exhausting challenge to do which we shall share with you all tomorrow...wish us luck 🤞🏼☺️😂
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🚐🫶🏼
I should say, for those who are new here...we are Trist and Kez and together with our dog Frank and cat Murphy we have been travelling the UK in our campervan Old Gertie for almost three years now. We haven't stopped and we haven't left! We share all the reasons why this little island captivates us so much through amazing places to stay in your campervan or motorhome and beautiful days out we discover along the way. We are currently trundling around Scotland enjoying all the ease it offers for Vanlife and are sharing every day as we go...we hope you'll join our adventures 🙌🏽
10 hours, 400 miles and roughly £110 worth of fuel is what it takes to drive a 36 year old campervan from the south coast of England all the way to Scotland 🙌🏽Go on Old Gertie 💪🏼🚐
Our first stop is in Dumfries,📍Caerlaverock Castle Community Campsite. It's a donation based small space for around 8 self contained campervans or motorhomes with three bays and an open space. It's about a 20 minute walk through the woods to the castle itself or you can explore the wetlands where there is also a bird hide to enjoy the wildlife. Such a peaceful night and the perfect intro into Vanlife in Scotland 🏴
We've been guilty in the past of racing to the Highlands or the NC500 but since slowing our pace considerably we've found there's some absolute magic in the South of Scotland that you miss if you go too fast.
If you have any recommendations for the South of Scotland then please do let us know...we have zero plans so are taking each day as it comes and of course sharing it all with you as we travel.
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🚐🫶🏼
Five mechanic visits, two new parts and almost two weeks delay...the old girl is fixed up and we are ready to start the epic road trip from the south of England to Scotland!! We decided to tackle the drive over two days and found a fab little Britstop to stay at called Bluebell Cider House. The pub is split into two halves, one side is your traditional pub and the other more a family friendly vibe. The staff were super friendly and the ales less then a tenner for two....that's when you know you've left the south 🤣. The pub is located right next to a canal which was honestly just the most beautiful walk in the morning, birds singing, autumnal colours and the smell of wood fires from the narrow boats 🙌🏽we could have wandered longer but it was time for the second shift and hopefully the final push to Scotland 🏴
We don't have any plans when we arrive, after the last two weeks we've learned better then that 🤣We are just going to take it slowly and soak up all the beauty that Scotland has.
First stop will definitely be a supermarket though...you can't not have a macaroni pie almost as soon as you arrive.
Anyway, for now, wish us luck on the final push. It says 4 hours and 20 minutes on the sat nav but when you are trundling along at 50mph I feel it might take us a little longer 🙈
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🫶🏼🚐
I think my smile says it all....SHES FIXED!!! 🚐❤️Old Gertie might be a 36 year old campervan but she is a little beast. As I type this we have just driven over 4 hours and she drove like a dream 🙌🏽 We are half way to Scotland and plan on doing the second part tomorrow when we can start sharing some more exciting vanlife adventures (over problems 🙈) I will share more in tomorrows reel but for now we are going to kick back and relax with a well earned celebration beer 🍻 Thanks for all your support and positive comments...now let the fun begin 🤗🏴
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🫶🏼🚐
Vanlife in Scotland, Delay Day #10...we honestly know there are worse things that can happen but to be immobile when your home has wheels is not an easy thing. Not only has it scuppered the start of our Scotland adventures but when your home isn't connected to the grid you run out of resources. The fact that every time we drive her we risk doing more damage or potentially finding ourselves in a dangerous situation doesn't make it easy. But hey! If we can't handle a challenge then who even are we 💪🏼 The second new part for our wheel has arrived today, now we are just waiting on a time to get it fitted and keeping everything crossed this is the solution. If you do Vanlife then you will know how debilitating it feels when something goes wrong with your campervan or motorhome so we are just hoping with everyday that we are back up and running. Off to explore and share it with you as we go.
Thanks for sticking with us ❤️
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🫶🏼🚐
The end of this vlog is the perfect example of how I feel right now 😂🤣It's groundhog day everyday at the moment! We will make it to Scotland, of that I'm certain. It's just the when?...we are waiting for 🙈
The hot wheel saga continues, a process of elimination, now waiting on a second part but hey! Worse things could happen right?! We are lucky we even get to live this life. Just a couple of 40 years olds, travelling all around the UK in our 36 year old campervan, exploring all it's hidden gems...I'd call that pretty lucky 🚐🫶🏼So even though this delay wasn't planned, everything happens for a reason and we are just super grateful that a) we caught this issue before something dangerous happened and b) we discovered it before disappearing off into the Highlands of Scotland.
Sit tight, please 🙏🏼I promise...Vanlife in Scotland is only days away 🤞🏼
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🚐🫶🏼
It started so well 🙈 a Vanlife reality of life in a 36 year old campervan...after a super late night with our amazing mechanic, we thought a new caliper had fixed our issue and we were finally off for our Scotland Vanlife adventures. But nope, Old Gertie had other ideas. We are now back in the garage with every fibre of our beings crossed and just hoping our whizz of a mechanic can diagnose the issue and we will be back on the road...I say 'back' when our entire life is on the road! Back to our Vanlife adventures I should say. Having a home on wheels has a balance, well it does in Old Gertie at least, explore for as long as you can until something needs fixing 🤣. I am honestly so sorry for the lack of content, I'm trying to stick to my promise of sharing daily...I just couldn't have picked a worse time to start. Honestly! Anyway, if your still following along (which I hope you are 🙌🏽) I will update you all again tomorrow.
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🫶🏼🚐
You couldn't write it at this point, we should have been in Scotland living our best Vanlife adventures, this time a week ago! But is every Vanlife reality, when your home has wheels, things don't always go to plan. Our mechanic is a legend just one who is loved by everyone which means squeezing us in last minute is a bit of a logistical nightmare. However as I am positing this in real time, as I type, we are finally on the ramps waiting for the work to begin. Now anyone who has an older campervan like Old Gertie will know, fitting new parts to an old system isn't always the easiest job so we are just hoping after this long delay that tomorrow's reel is going to be us finally getting on the road, headed north towards adventure 🙌🏽If you've stuck with this series so far...thank you!! I promise and I hope 🤣that things are about to get much more exciting from this point onwards.
Thanks for sticking with us and supporting us with your likes, comments and messages ❤️
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the gang 🚐🫶🏼
One hurdle at a time ☺️We have the part, now to have it fitted 🤞🏼Our mechanic is an absolute gem and is doing his best to find a space to squeeze us in but it's not looking promising. Ah what can you do...you will know as we do 🤣and hopefully in the next few days these reels can be upgraded to the epicness that is Scotland 🙌🏽
If you are new here, Hey we are Trist and Kez and together with our French bulldog frank and our car Murphy we are travelling and exploring the UK in our 36 years old campervan Old Gertie. We share all the best spots to stay overnight and all the places to visit to make the most out of your campervan adventures in the UK.
We hope you join us in our current adventure...trying to get to Scotland 🚐🏴
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🚐🫶🏼
Day two of the reel series 'sharing all the wonders of Vanlife in Scotland'...gone completely wrong!!! But hey I made a promise so here is the daily update of driving our 36 year old campervan from the South of England to Scotland. What could go wrong? A seized caliper! Part ordered now it's the waiting game...
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🚐🫶🏼
Driving Old Gertie our 36 year old campervan from the the south coast of England all the way to the North of Scotland...we've only been counting down to this roadtrip for the past month so in true Vanlife reality of course something had to go wrong as soon as we set off 🙈 iwe will share more tomorrow but to say this wasn't the reel start to the reel series I had planned is an understatement! Just keep your fingers crossed for us 🤞🏼
Doing Vanlife in a old campervan is definitely trickier than in a modern van but we love Old Gertie so she is worth the hassle.
Scotland isn't off the agenda, just delayed for a day (maybe two) but as I write this we are yet to know the outcome, so soon as we know, we will let you know! We plan on sharing a vlog everyday of our 6th epic road trip to Scotland in Old Gertie so make sure you are following along to share in the adventure 🙌🏽The ups, the downs and all the inbetweens...we are delivery it all.
A balance of the epic Vanlife adventures with a real big smudge of the reality mixed in ☺️
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🚐🫶🏼
7 Years we've been exploring the UK in campervans (the last 3 in our 36 year old home on wheels) and we haven't left yet! Wild camping, budget campsites and business locations have been our go-to stays and we share them all with you! If you want to find out more about Vanlife in the UK then why not head over to our page and follow along on our adventures 🚐🫶🏼
I had a groove of sharing and then fell off the wagon 🤣which is so easily done when life gets busy. I always feel bad as we find so many amazing spots on the road, the UK is truly awesome for Vanlife despite what people say 😉 and when I'm not regular with our updates I feel like we are gatekeeping the best bits! I know we share our weekly YouTube vlogs but not everyone on here watches us on there so my inconsistency is more apparent! It's been a wonderfully jam packed end to the Summer for us, filled with lots of normal life stuff in between the Vanlife adventures and I'm not sorry I've soaked up every moment. BUT I am a creator of two parts...all or nothing 🤣and as life gets back to vanlife travel we are heading to Scotland, my plan is to vlog everyday. I suppose this post is more a place holder to keep my committed to my promise but also as a reminder...take life at your own pace! Time is the only true currency we have, make sure you invest yours in the things you love. For a while, for me (Trist creates the YouTube vlogs and hasn't missed a beat 🤣) it was being in the moment but the recharge has fueled me to come back and share this wonderful way of life with you all. I have one vlog created and another one in edit after which I plan on posting everyday on here. So if you want to see what Vanlife is like in Scotland or see if our 36 year old campervan can even make it there...then make sure to keep your eyes peeled. Whatever happens, we know it will be an adventure. Life in Old Gertie always is ☺️
Lots of love (as always)
Old Gertie and the Gang 🫶🏼🚐
Ever wondered what Vanlife is like in the UK? Well we are doing it in a 36 year old campervan called Old Gertie. She may not be perfect but wow has she taken us on some adventures. Proving everyday and for the last two and half years that you don't need anything fancy to start this adventure lifestyle...just a lot of patience 🤣☺️ Are you tempted by an old campervan or just want to discover all the amazing locations that the UK has to offer then why not follow along on our journey 🚐🫶🏼
SWIPE LEFT...Forever proving that Vanlife in the UK is just awesome! There is so much to see on this little island and exploring it all in a campervan is truly the best way. Especially when you find overnight spots like this which are totally free for an incredibly low cost membership, I'm talking only £35 for an entire year and you get to stay at places like this for FREE! If you want to find out all the details then check out our most recent post or if you want to see more of what the UK has to offer when exploring in a 36 year old campervan then why not follow along on our journey 🫶🏼🚐we are heading to Scotland in the coming days so lots to see and even more to share!
We struck gold in the South of England 📍Bluebell Vineyard is a new overnight spot added to Britstops and yet again we were blown away. Firstly by the incredibly welcoming hosts, the vineyard is actually closed on a Monday and Tuesday but they still welcomed us to stay! I mean how amazing is that! We 1000% will be back to sample and buy the wine next time we are in the area, I mean how could we not...kindness is debt we happily repay.
Secondly the location was out of this world. Parked up on the flat gravel carpark, we had the whole place to ourselves. You are welcomed to wander the vineyard, explore the extensive woodland or just enjoy any of the multiple seating areas they have set up. Businesses take note...this is how you get customers!
The fact that Sheffield park is only a 4 minute drive away and a trust based farm shop also 8 minutes walk away you really couldn't ask for anything more. Located only 30 minutes drive from the seaside city of Brighton this is quite honestly one of the best Britstops we've found to date and you all know we've found some gems.
Travelling the UK in our campervan we couldn't be without our Britstops membership. Being part of such a positive concept around Vanlife and being given the opportunity to find and explore local businesses often undiscoverable without our membership, it's truly a gold dust tool in your Vanlife kit list and one we highly recommend!
P.S Little update...we plan on heading straight to Scotland after a wedding this week on the South coast which means an epic road trip for our 36 year old campervan but we have faith in the ole girl. I'm thinking of doing a mini vlog each day as we take our Vanlife travels to Scotland as we know how much you all love it there. What do you think? Is that something you would enjoy following along with?
Lots of love,

If your on the NC500 in Scotland you've already gone too far! Loch Skeen is hidden high up in the Moffat hills and it's a hike you won't want to miss. Park in the Grey Mares Tail National Trust carpark at the foot of a 40 metre high waterfall then follow the hike up into the Sky. It's not a short walk so be prepared for a hike and the height makes it not for the faint hearted (says someone scared of heights 🤣). Once you reach the top of the waterfall you follow the river (or burn as the Scots say ☺️) along the top of the hills. The path bends and turns and you keep expecting the magic around each corner which only adds to the ahah moment when the loch appears in front of you. It's truly one of the most magical spots we've visited in Scotland and one you won't want to miss on your road trips in your campervan.
Whilst everyone rushes to the NC500 they miss the magic that's all around. Scotland is truly one of the most breathtaking places to visit in your camper, endorsed by travellers from around the world! Loch Skeen is a true testament to that.
If you are planning a trip to Scotland then don't forget we also have a map which covers everything and anything you need for your campervan adventures including water and waste points, endless places to stay and even more to visit. If you are interested just leave us a comment or send us a message and we will happily talk you through the purchase. P.S it's life time access 🤗

In 7 years of Vanlife we haven't once left the UK...why would we? I think our page shows you all. The UK is incredible, so much to discover and so much more to explore. So many hidden gems around every corner, we are yet to get bored. Having spend most of the summer in the New Forest we are now heading to Scotland which is easily one of our favourite parts of the UK. If you want to know what Autumnal Vanlife is like in a 36 year old campervan then why not join our journey. Swipe left and follow along, we would love to have you along for the ride.

✨Top tips for travelling with a cat in a campervan, it's easier than you think...
- full disclosure I was super worried how Murphy would adjust and in many ways felt I was taking away his freedom. However following the right steps I can genuinely say Murphy is happier in a campervan then I could have ever imagined.
FIRST - Lead training 🐈
First step is getting them used to a harness. It's best to do it in stages over the course of a week.
Step 1
Show them the harness, let them smell it and put it on the floor with a couple of treats on it. This creates good association.
Step 2
Put the harness on whilst giving treats as you do so. One final treat once it's on, then remove immediately.
Step 3
Repeat step 2 leaving the harness on for longer each time until your cat is walking around with it on.
Step 4
Attach the lead. Do not let it go taught. This will spook your cat. Instead follow them around with plenty of slack.
Step 5
Very gently put tension on the lead for when you want them to stop. Never pull on the lead, this will give them enough tension to wriggle free. If you stay close to your cat you can always pick them up to re- direct them if needed.
Little and often is best, with plenty of treats and praise. Positive association is what you're aiming for. Murphy now runs over when he sees his harness, purring loudly.
NEXT
Keep them inside a week before travel so they become used to their litter box.
FiNALLY
Grow some cat grass. You can pick up a set cheaply on Amazon, it grows in a couple of days and gives your cat a taste of the outside and helps with their digestion.
Combine all the above with plenty of toys and you are good to go 🙌🏽
I hope this helps your own campervan or motorhome adventures with your own cat.
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🫶🏼🚐
It's not worth it! A phrase we've heard people say about Britstops. A claim that all the spots are also available on other sites or apps but that's wrong. Many hidden gems are exclusive to Britstops. A membership scheme that helps change the sometimes negative perception of Vanlife in the UK into a positive relationship that promotes the value of tourism to lesser known locations.
Whilst we love wild parking it's not always that easy for many reasons. Having a membership that gives you access to user reviewed overnight and allowed stays is actual gold dust when exploring the UK in a campervan or motorhome and we wouldn't be without ours.
What we love the most is that you don't have to sacrifice your crave for nature as there are country pubs, vineyards, farms and more available as part of the membership.
Are you a member yet? Whether you are full-time Vanlife or just on your holiday campervan travels around the UK. Britstops is a tool you will want in your tool box. It's definitely one of our Vanlife essentials.
Don't you agree?

Autumn is here 🍁and it will be the third one we have done in Old Gertie! Not bad for a 36 year old campervan, crazy hey?! We all know Trist is the summer baby but now we have stepped into my season 🙌🏽 and to celebrate we are heading off to Scotland...I mean what better location to see in the change. We still have a couple of weeks travelling around the south coast before we head off and I still have updates from our travels around Somerset to share (I have started to add park ups in the highlights if that helps) but you can be 100% assured, I may be slow but I promise to share it all with you.
Who's ready for Scotland? 🏔️💙🏴
We don't have a diesel heater or a fancy battery set up. Our campervan is almost 50% windows and did I mention it's 36 years old BUT against all the odds this will be our 3rd Autumn doing Vanlife in the UK 🍁 and we can't wait. The changing colours, the quieter spaces and the epic road trips we have planned are just too exciting. The wilds of the UK come alive in Autumn and we can't wait to explore...are you going to come along for the ride?
If you want to know what life is like in a 36 year old campervan during the Autumn and the Winter in the UK then you've found the page you've been looking for 🙌🏽

The UK has so much more to offer for Vanlife and Campervan Travel then I think people realise. We've been exploring for seven years now and full-time for the past two and we still haven't left. If you love old campervans (ours is a Talbot Express who is 30+ years old, called Old Gertie) or just want to explore the UK in your own campervan then hopefully you will find our page helpful. We share places to stay, spots to visit and helpful tips and tricks to make the most of life on the road. All things Vanlife UK.

Don't believe people when they say the UK is rubbish for Vanlife! How can it be when pubs like this let you stay for free in their field behind the pub, opposite a lama field, with a gate straight into the pub garden!
Looking for places to stay overnight in the UK in your campervan? Then we may just be the page you've been looking for.
We've made exploring the UK our full-time mission and we share the best places to visit and stay as we find them.
The UK has so much to offer...more then people realise...why not follow along on our adventures. If your intrigued we hope to help, if your sceptical we plan to surprise! Something for everyone ☺️🚐
Our first 24 hours of Campervan adventures in Dorset! A fab little pub park up for the night and brilliant day out. The double whammy.
The Botney Bay Inne just off the A31 is perfectly positioned to explore from. Recently renovated the inside of the pub is comfort personified with a lovely little garden at the back set around a water feature in the centre. For the cost of a drink (or food) if you prefer you can park in the shingled carpark at the back away from the main carpark and the comings and goings of other customers. What more could you ask for. The main road runs just behind the pub so it means you don't have to venture far from your route when out on your Vanlife adventures around Dorset. Also the perfect spot if you are travelling too or from Cornwall.
Being the fact it was only an 18 minute drive from Kingston Lacy, a National Trust day out we've had on our list for while, this was the perfect stay for us.
Kingston Lacy is a 8500 acre estate with a house, gardens, tearoom/cafe including plenty of woodland walks to explore. Famed for it's Japanese themed gardens and a house which is home to the largest Private collection of Egyptian artifacts in the UK...its a place filled with stories, secrets and surprises. It didn't disappoint! The gardens change in colour with the seasons so we will definitely be back to explore again. You can't take dogs in the house or the formal garden but there is still so much to explore...Frank loved it as much as we did!
So yes, we did it, we finally left the New Forest. Sure we might not have stumbled far but I think that just goes to show how much the UK has to offer. You don't need to travel far to see/find something new around every corner!
Hopefully this helps provide you with 24 hours worth of adventure in your own campervan if you plan on visiting Dorset...we couldn't recommend it enough.
Next we are heading to spot we've seen soooo many people calling a hidden gem. We have been before but seeing you had to pay to enter decided against it. We weren't sure it was worth the money. However intrigue has got the better of us so we've decided to give it a go...
Lots of love
Old Gertie and the Gang 🫶🏽🚐
Budget friendly beautiful locations have been the theme of the last couple of weeks in the New Forest 💚 We've explored more but there's only so much you can fit into 20 slides and if I don't share now my camera roll is going to burst!
With around 130 forestry carparks across the New Forest you never run out of incredible picnic spots to enjoy, be it for brekkie, lunch or dinner. Our favourites for date nights ☺️ with Hatchets Pond and Puttles Bridge up there in our top 5.
Of course we couldn't resist another @toogoodtogo.uk which is fast becoming one of our favourite apps...I mean £4.35 for 4 meals! What an incredible deal. If you haven't yet downloaded the app then let this be your sign 🙌🏽
Do we have a favourite village in the New Forest? Impossible, we love them all for different reasons but Bucklers Hard has to be the most unique and in the evening it's practically deserted so an ideal time to visit (we cycled which we highly recommend as it's a beautiful ride).
BUT and I know I've said it before but this time I mean it...it's time to turn the wheels of our little home and get ourselves off on a new adventure. Trist is currently editing our new vlog for tomorrow, The Top Ten best things to do in the New Forest (so keep your eyes peeled for that) and once he is done we are going to get planning!
We will be back to the New Forest, it's impossible to stay away, but for now new pastures await...and we are excited to see where we end up. Which if you've followed us for a while, you will know, could be absolutely anywhere in the UK!
Lots of love,
Old Gertie & the Gang 🫶🏽🚐
Details and Budget Hacks in the Caption ⬇️ These are our essential tools for Vanlife when travelling the UK in a campervan.
⛺Pitch up

Simple summer evenings 🍻 in the New Forest...Nature provides the fridge, so we bring the beers ☺️
When how you live veers off the path from the norm, it filters into everything you do. Friday nights out look a little different but that's what we love about it.
Taking something simple and letting nature make it magic...it doesn't get better.
I know travelling in a campervan our favourite thing should be seeing new places, the epic adventures, but honestly what we love most is taking old habits and turning them into new moments.
So this summer, let this be your inspiration...grab that picnic blanket and take yourself for a night out in nature 💚 Even better, get yourself to the New Forest 🙌🏽 its a trip you won't regret.

We are living proof you don't need a fancy expensive campervan to travel the UK...we are doing it in our 36 year old campervan, Old Gertie and she has taken us all over this little island! It's easy to think that Vanlife is all sprinter vans and VWs (we used to, in fact we had a VW before) but you don't need to worry, it's just hype. There are so many vintage Campervans touring the UK, you will be surprised. The parts aren't as hard to come by as people make you believe and the engines are so simple to work on, you can end up fixing things yourself! Why not swipe left and see where an old van like this can take you ❤️🚐
Why the rush to leave? After 7+ years of exploring the UK we are still finding absolutel gems on our travels. You have so many places to visit in England, Scotland and Wales...so much to explore and enjoy and we love sharing it with you all. Inspiring UK Travel is what we love and why we do what we do, there is so much adventure on our doorstep that so many people miss. If you have a campervan or just love the great outdoors then why not follow along on our adventures, hopefully we can help inspire or inform your very own travels of this little island ☺️🚐🫶🏽
Out on your campervan adventures this Summer? Then don't forget the New Forests epic coastline 🙌🏽 an area you won't want to miss on your visit to Hampshire...or England for that matter!
Sandy beaches, blue sea, what more can you ask for!
Whilst the countryside in New Forest is incredible, in part due to the free roaming animals you really can't miss the stunning coastline when you visit this area. It's as picturesque as you would imagine this area to boast.
📍Lepe Beach is just one example and possibly one of the best. With a huge stretch of coast to walk it's rich in history and spoiled in beauty.
A full day out is easily spent exploring this area, with platform walks, information points and world war remnants. It also has a cafe on stalks where you can pull up a chair with stunning sea views and enjoy a snack or a drink.
There is parking by the seafront (limited) or a huge car park just behind, with parking only costing £7 for the whole day it's easily a must see stop on your campervan adventures around the UK.
Travelling the UK for over a total of 7+ years we only recently discovered Lepe beach last year! How we missed it up until this point I will never know. Proof that even after all these years the UK still turns up hidden gems we knew nothing about.
One to add to your summer adventures...we hope you enjoy ☺️

Isn't the UK in summer such a vibe 🙌🏽 Campervan adventures around the UK are quite frankly magical in the Summer and if you have been following us for a while you know we are currently hooked on the New Forest 💚🧡
Can you blame us! So many cost effective places to stay (check out our recent reels) and so much to explore it's literally a giant nature playground.
Making the most of the great outdoors is what we love the most about this time of year. From sunrise to sunset, the UK is just the most awesome place to explore...we will eventually move on, but that's what we love about slow travel, we can take it at our own pace.
If you too, love all there is about the wilds of the UK then you are following the right account ☺️and if you aren't following along on our campervan adventures yet, then now's your chance 😉
One thing we've learned in living a simpler life through Vanlife is that you create a rich life when you seek the joy and celebrate it.
Life isn't perfect, the entire concept of that, a subjective ideal and not a reality.
However that doesn't mean you cant create a happy life inspite of the ebbs and flows. It's where you focus your energy that your life grows. If you constantly choose to shine a light on what goes wrong then that will become centre stage of what happens. Instead pay attention to what goes right. Seek joy.
Chase that sunset. Create that yummy food. Explore. Adventure. Live every moment like it's your last because as they say, life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how you react to it.
This weekend we were very limited in what we could do in a hot van with two animals...but looking back it's hard to remember the sweaty struggle (which it was at times) when there were so many other moments of joy ☺️
We hope you all had a lovely weekend wether you were out adventuring in your campervan or keeping cool at home...here's to a great week.
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang 🚐🫶🏽
Save this post to find the £10 seaside campsite in Cornwall, Bude.
(A little reminder for those planning on going camping this summer in the UK)
If you like basic camping and prioritise location over facilities then this one's for you. A simple farmers field with the most epic sea view. The only facilities are one toilet and fresh water. Nothing else. But what more do you need? They allow Campervans and tents...even caravans but I warn you the farmers track you drive to access this epic spot is incredibly bumpy so be warned.
Pick up the west coast path (or the salt path as many now know it) and walk into Bude with it's free tidal pool or brave the more hilly inclines in the opposite direction.
No booking system, just pull up where you choose and in the evening the farmers will make their way around to pick up your £10.
We think this is the best campsite in Cornwall, we think you will too ☺️

Anyone else? Or just me 🤷🏼♀️🤣 I see so many cool 'day in the life' Vanlife reels and every morning I vow to make my own...and fail! Living in a van, there is always something to be doing or seeing. Having not left the UK in two years I think it would be good for people to see what they day of Vanlife is in the UK but in all honesty I think the places we share are far more interesting ☺️Don't you?
If you haven't been to the New Forest in the UK then you do not know what you are missing! Free roaming animals go where they want and do what they want. It's truly one of the most unique places to visit in the UK, the kind of 'seeing is believing' type of place. Constant traffic jams but of a very different type happen daily here. Donkeys, cows, ponies...and sometimes pigs have the right to roam and roam they do. It's basically the UKs version of a free safari.
Seaside Suppers & Bargain Buys was the theme of this past weekend in Old Gertie ✨
Whilst the New Forest has a packed full countryside you don't want to miss out on the beautiful coastline too. Milford on Sea and Lepe Beach are our two favourite day spots. You can walk to Hurst Castle from the sea lane at Milford on Sea (it's free to park at the moment but charges are coming soon so now is a great time to visit). Lepe Beach is already chargeable but still makes the perfect place to park up in your campervan for the day to enjoy the area, worth every penny!
Which I think we've shown you how we save in the post 🤣but I mean, who doesn't love a bargain.
We didn't eat at a resteraunt but we had sushi by the sea. We didn't eat at a cafe but had a cooked breakfast in woods. Ok we did have a pint at the brewery but we also enjoyed a beer by the stream...you could call it a budget lifestyle but I see all the above as a luxury ☺️Value doesn't need to always be about price does it. Which just goes to show when we went to the bootsale, what someone was selling for 50p was actually worth sooo much more. We live in such a throw away world, people don't even know what they are missing out on.
I think what I loved most was when I picked up the red jug, the lady said how happy she was it was going to a good home. Which is exactly what our little ole Campervan is, a happy Vanlife home.
Oh and p.s. if you are travelling through Burley make sure you pick up some of their onsite brewed cider made from the apples in their orchard. It's delicious. If you checked out our most recent reel you will.also know it's a great place for a one night stop over.
Ok I think that's it from me ☺️thanks reading and we hope the budget luxury tips helped with your own campervan adventures in the New Forest.
Happy Vanlife 'ing
Lots of love,
Old Gertie & the gang 🫶🏻🚐
The UK has so much more to offer the people think. Holidays come around and everyone looks to book the first flight out of the UK without realising what they are missing. For the last two years we have explored the length and breadth of the UK in our campervan highlighting the value of budget travel and proving that adventures can be affordable whilst also feeling magical. Days out, overnight stays and good old fashioned camping are what we are about. So if you want to discover more of the UK this summer then why not follow along on our adventures, I think you'll be surprised at how much beauty is right on our doorstep.
Whilst we are a Vanlife channel that doesn't mean you need a van to enjoy what we do. Showcasing the best of the UK, you can choose to camp, air BnB or boon a hotel in any of the areas we share for your own extended visits or just rock up and enjoy for the day.
We hope it helps inspires your own holidays on this lovely little island 💚
This is one of our favourite overnight stays in the New Forest. A gorgeous field with so much space due to the limited number of Campervans allowed (two). Previously exclusive to Britstop members only (which makes this free with your membership) they have now opened it up to everyone for £10 a night. It's only available for a one night stay at a time but is bookable in advance.
Burley cider farm stay is a field which is next to their carpark where they allow overnight stays in your campervan. They have 24 hour toilets, fresh water, bins and electric hookup for an extra charge of £8.
This is a camp spot you have to add to your Vanlife adventures when visiting the New Forest. On the edge of Burley village this makes a fantastic stay if you want to explore but also the perfect location to just relax and enjoy the peaceful location.
The cider is made from apples in their orchard and comes in three huge barrels, dry, medium or sweet. You choose the size of your container and they fill it up on the spot. We went with the 4 Pinter for only £11.50...where else can you get a pint that cheap in a location like this!
The shop also stocks many more different bottled ciders and on our recent visit now also sells local honey in various forms.
With so much space and only two vans this feels like a private exclusive campsite at a fraction of the cost! Budget travel in the UK doesn't mean you need to sacrifice, this stay proves it.
I will add...mobile signal is very poor in Burley and the village so if you are a Bristop member we recommend screenshotting your details for check in.
& Make sure to call ahead, this a popular spot...which once you visit you will see why 💚
If you love slow travel Vanlife in the UK then I would humbley say...we might just be the account you've been looking for. Having lived and travelled for over two years now in our campervan Old Gertie we haven't once yet left the UK. Our slow travels adventures have taken us far and wide on this little island and we are still finding so much to explore. Taking our time, soaking it up as we go, it's amazing our rich the journey becomes once you slow the pace. If you too enjoy the calming moments that living in nature can bring and want to discover the UK through someone else's eyes, why not follow along with your journey?
Lots of love,

Welcome to Bucklers Hard in the New Forest, a spot you HAVE to add to your campervan adventures when in the area. This was our first time visiting and we have been to the New Forest sooo many times, don't make the same mistake we did and almost miss out on visiting this spot.
Bucklers Hard is historically a ship building village right on the banks of one of the worlds only privately owned estuaries, the river Beauliegh. Despite the many historical buildings you can enter for free and the array of picnic benches also available this is actually a living village. What a place to live! Wow.
You can even still get a drink or a bite to eat in the good old fashioned boozer right at the end of the village. A true transportation in time 🙌🏽
Alongside the free cottage, chapel and outbuilding you can explore there is also a museum at a charge...top tip, look out for the discount code as you explore for money off your entry to the museum.
Parking for your campervan is chargeable however if you don't mind a stroll through nature you can park in Beauliegh and walk the 2 mile tow path which connects the two villages.
Round the corner you also have Hatchets Pond which is one of our favourite places for a picnic as the wild animals LOVE this spot.
So many people who enjoy Vanlife skip this area due to the ban on wild parking but for us, a chargeable campsite is worth it when the free entertainment is plentiful.
I hope this helps when planning your own Vanlife adventures, it's stops like this that makes the journey so wonderful 💚

July we have lots of plans but we are in no rush because I think we've unlocked the next level of slow travel this month 🤗We don't want to leave & can you blame us? Vanlife in the New Forest delivers everything you could want without hours or miles of driving in between.
Just this last week alone has shown us that yet again. This time we popped into Lymington, the old market town considered the gateway to the New Forest and explored the cobbled streets and stalls. We finally went strawberry picking which we've been promising ourselves we would do, at Goodalls farm. Picnic walks along the ornamental drive, evenings eating in the sunshine and wild animals for neighbours.
Vanlife living in it's perfection 🙌🏽Now this probably makes us the worst Vanlife travel account to follow as we aren't showing/sharing lots of new spots but hopefully it also shows you that this way of life doesn't need to be a race. You can take your time soaking up the moments and enjoying the campervan adventures as they unfold.
Where will July take us, we have an idea but if you've followed us for a while you will know...we are useless at sticking to plans.
The UK has so much to offer and so many places to explore, we are spoiled for choice 💚

Home becomes more than just a campervan when you live Vanlife 💚 Living in a small space you find yourself spending more time outside then you ever did in a house. With the warmer evenings and the late setting sun, camping overnight in the middle of nature and relaxing until last light has been a daily occurrence for us recently. It's one of the many things we love about Vanlife living, the simple moments that feel the most magic. On Monday evening just gone, The New Forest free roaming ponies idled past us, without a second glance, just happily living their life undisturbed by everything around them. It was a contagious calming feeling ✨ one that reminds us why we chose this life in the first place. It wasnt to chase a rich life, instead a valuable one. With time over money & moments over things 💚🚐
Want to know the ins and outs, the ups and downs, the tips and tricks to Vanlife in the UK? Well we've been living it for two years now and have never left. Why would we need too? Vanlife in the UK is incredible. You don't have to travel far and there is so much to see. From coastline to countryside the UK really does have it all & we love it. Slow Summer Days...this is what makes Vanlife for us 💛and the New Forest is just magical at this time of year. Everywhere you look there is something to enjoy. The flourish of nature and wildlife collide at this time of year to make you feel like you stepped into a living postcard. As my previous reel said...it's like taking your campervan on a free UK safari wherever you travel. Every carpark, every campsite becomes an animal watching dream. Added to the fact the forest is scattered with quaint little villages to explore you never run out of things to do. Have you been to Bucklers Hard yet? Wow! This one blew us away.
The one thing we love most about the New Forest is despite it being such a popular spot to explore in the UK you don't have to wander far to find your one slice of paradise. Be it a paddle in a stream, a beer under the dappled sunlight in the woods or just a picnic on the open heathland. It will feel like it's just you and the world.
Slow travel, simple living that's why we love Vanlife and the New Forest is just a dream. So for now we aren't moving because travel isnt just about how far you go, it's how much you soak up as you explore and we are living life like a couple of sponges 🫶🏻
Have you been to the New Forest yet? If not then let this be your sign to get yourself here. It's a destination no one should miss on your campervan adventures around the UK.
Lots of love,
The Old Gertie Gang x
A wild and free safari for the perfect day out in your campervan. With endless drives and free to park for the day nature and wildlife filled carparks 📍 The New Forest in Hampshire is a dream destination on your Vanlife travels. Its the only place in the UK where you will find free roaming Donkeys, cows, ponies and pigs. You will also see deer in their plentiful and seals in the middle of a village if you're lucky!
It's truly a wildlife dream. Without fences to hold the animals in they will cross the road right in front of your campervan. It's very much their land and you are just travelling through it 💚
Exploring the UK in your campervan, you will not find another place like this. It's truly a Vanlife dream.
For hundreds of years the 'commoners' of the New Forest hold the right to offer all their animals free grazing. Which you will find if you choose to stay overnight at any of the camping new forest sites, the animals will be your neighbours.
Experiencing nature so up close is something you have to experience first hand. We highly recommend visiting in Spring as you will also get to see the baby animals who are, quite frankly, just too cute!
Secure & wild camping hidden in the woods of the New Forest in the UK. Surrounded by free roaming animals. From only £12.30 a night, you get access, through a locked gate (details given when booking online through @campingnewforest , see end of caption) to a clearing in the middle of the woods. Choose to park your campervan anywhere and settle yourself into nature. This truly is a spot Vanlife dreams are made of.
Surrounded by trees the air is filled with bird song and wild deer, ponies and donkeys freely roam around you. A slice of peaceful, quiet heaven, where you can relax in the wild nature of the great British countryside.
It's overnight camp spots like this that set the bar in the UK. They have everything you need when out on a Vanlife adventure, bins, water and even a chemical waste point.
📍Longbeech Wild Campsite, run by Camping New Forest, ADULTS ONLY. *Chemical toilet is required to stay, if you need to put up a toilet tent that is included in the price - Save for your next campervan travels around the UK or share it with someone you think would love this spot as much as we do.
(P.S please abide to the New Forest code)
Our biggest lesson from Vanlife and not having left the UK in two years, is just how lucky we are to call this home.
Travelling around the UK fills you with so much gratitude at how much beauty this little island holds.
I know so many aren't happy with the time limits they face in Europe and how it impacts their Vanlife travels but I think that makes people forget how amazing it is to be able to spend as long as you could possibly want in the UK. Exploring, discovering, adventuring as far and wide as you choose.
What a privilege it truly is to call the UK home.

Vanlife living makes you appreciate the outdoors in ways we never used too. Going for a drink takes on a whole new meaning 🤗 Especially when camped up right next to the sea. Countryside or Coastline, the UK is just stunning.
The simple life is amazing, it let's you see the luxuries in things you would have once never thought of. I think that's a part of Vanlife we love the most, you can make everyday a special occasion. Especially when you are parked up in places like this.
Whether it be taking a picnic on a walk, hanging some fairy lights around a picnic table for your evening dinner, sitting in the grass cooking a BBQ or just climbing some rocks to enjoy the view... romanticising simple moments is magical ✨
Another reason this way of life gets our vote, simple luxuries make you feel rich everyday ❤️

Vanlife living can fool you into thinking it needs to be an endless roadtripping adventure. It can make you think that unless your ticking off destinations then you are not giving the effort this life deserves. Yet this week was just another reminder to us why we love slow teavel. Slowing the pace creates the gratitude you need to fuel you forward. We've sat in the grass and cooked, we chased moonlight and sunrises. We've taken it slow but feel like we've lived so much. That's what happens when you slow everything down, when you give your presence to the moment. Every little thing becomes magic.
Setting out alarms for 4am this morning to see the sunrise on Friday the 13th felt like the perfect way to remind life...it can throw what it wants our way but our perspective remains untainted.
Tomorrow's problems are still waiting but for now we are living rich.
Rich in moments every single day.
Lots of love
The Old Gertie Gang

Wow, we were blown away. Not only is Cannock Chase in the Midlands of England one of the most beautiful places to visit, the Tackeroo campsite feels like it's best kept secret. For only £15 a night you can park up in the middle of the forest with bins, grey water disposal, fresh water and zero pitches...which means finding your spot amongst the canopy of trees be it next to one of the freely provided picnic benches or tucked away into a corner. Rich in World war 1 and 2 history, surrounded by nature, this is truly a gem for those who love the great outdoors. You can explore for miles by foot on the endless footpaths, visit memorial sites, old military training grounds or jump on your bike and trial the multiple mountain bike tracks that are readily available. A must stop spot for your campervan adventures in the UK.

*Only available to Campervans, this is the overflow carpark so is also used by patrons during opening hours so make sure you call ahead before arriving (also on park4night, search4sites and Britstops) - 📍The Saracens Head pub in Staffordshire know how to make you feel welcome...finding places like this is why we love Vanlife in the UK. You will see from some of our recent reels that we have been blown away with what the Midlands have to offer.
This pub allows you to stay overnight in their overflow carpark which has a gate directly into their gorgeous beer garden and a field filled with lamas right next door. Here comes the clincher...they even do a food and drinks takeaway menu so if you don't fancy eating or drinking in you can enjoy all the delights at your van. 2 for 1 pizzas run all week, with a steak deal on a Thursday. They even do cocktails to take away!
The staff were so lovely and they couldn't make you feel more welcome, the pub even opens for breakfast so if you didn't fancy an evening treat one is available in the morning.
What I love the most is they don't demand you spend to stay but when the offering is so generous it feels easy to give something back.
One to add to your Vanlife adventures...with the Shugborough Estate (free to NT members) only a 16 minute drive away this is a great stopover to round off a day out.

Bringing you up to speed...or slowing it down I should say 🤣 Slow Vanlife travel activated.
After an abrupt end to our midlands adventures and spending a week trying to figure out how to manage Old Gertie's issues (when you live in your campervan it's not easy to just drop it off with the mechanic. It's our home on wheels after all) feeling ill and reversing into a post we decided it was time to recalerbrate.
We've had some amazing offers of help with Old Gertie (I won't bore you with the details of her seized screw) which we are so grateful for and we know it's not a big problem. However sometimes lots of little things add up and thats when things can get overwhelming. All just part of living in a campervan, life still lifes at you sometimes.
So rather than scramble our heads more trying to work out the logistics we decided to just do nothing 🤣Probably not the best way to handle things but it works for us.
Being in nature is what we love most about Vanlife and slowing everything down and just loosing ourselves for a while is the quickest way to recharge our perspective and clear our heads.
I know a lot of vanlifers don't like campsites and more often than not, many are on the go, go, go. I just don't think we are cut out for the fast pace. Which kinda helps that we live in an old campervan...fast isn't in her vocab. We love a campsite to just have your own little space for a while. Plus it means we get to put the awning up which makes us feel spoiled with space.
For now, we are just taking each day as it comes. Taking gratitude from the simple life and enjoying the little moments.
Life will root you sometimes but it's your focus which feeds what will flourish. We are counting our blessings, of which there are many and enjoying the living part of what Vanlife offers.
Everything will get resolved and all the little niggles will be sorted...but for now that's a tomorrow's problem. We just haven't yet decided which tomorrow that will be 🤣
Lots of love,
The Old Gertie Gang x

Days out are just as important on your Vanlife adventures as they are places to stay...at least they are for us ☺️ For only £8 per person or £13.60 for a joint monthly membership, the National Trust is a key part of our Campervan tool kit. Whilst you can't stay overnight, you are welcome to park up for the day in some of the most beautiful surroundings. We recently visited the Shugborough estate which was easily one of our most favourite days out on this trip. Set within acres of Greenland you can choose to roam the estate, keep your eyes peeled for wild deer. Visit the mansion house, if you don't have a dog with you. Or if like us you have a pooch in tow you can spend hours exploring the formal gardens which are filled with sculptures and so many flowering shrubs we lost count...this time of year is literally a rainbow of colour. They even have a farm onsite with a lovely little cafe. If that wasn't enough you can also visit the kitchen garden famous for growing pineapples all those years ago. Pack a picnic because it's easy to get lost for the entire day!
As we travel we love to support local businesses and whilst the National Trust may not be local your membership goes towards paying for the upkeep and maintenance of these beautiful sites, without which would and could be lost. By scanning your card for a day at Shugborough estate they are able to gain £3.87 towards these costs for this particular location.
We have had countless days out through the National Trust and they have been a key part of our Vanlife travels. We hope by sharing it helps you make the most of your own travels around the UK as you explore this fabulous island.
