A Secret Overnight Spot Hidden in the Sand Dunes...

On the east coast of Scotland, tucked away into a little peninsula this has to be one of the quietest and most remote beach spots we have found on our vanlife travels around Scotland. With a long sandy beach teaming with wildlife, forest walks and sand dunes this is both a nature lover and wildlife watcher's dream. Whilst there is also a car park closer to town (at £12.50 a night) we prefer to escape the hustle and bustle which this spot offers. With one-night authorised stays from the local council, this is a spot you won't want to miss.
Funnily enough on park4night, the description for this spot describes it as not the prettiest of places which just goes to show the value of us sharing these spots with you as that could not be further from the truth.
As you drive passed Golspie town/village you follow the road which runs along the side of the golf course into the trees. Heading down this road you will pass a number of laybys, please don't be tempted to park in then when there is a designated spot further down just waiting for you.
Pulling off the road into the carpark (what3words:///hacksaw.steepest.pairings ) you are surrounded by sand dunes with a forest to your left which is full of deer! I mean a beach and deer watching right from your park up, what more do you need?
The spot itself is facility-free aside from a bin so be prepared to come self-contained.
The sand dunes which surround the car park make for a fantastic walk, you will even find a rope swing smack bang in the middle which young or old, is always so much fun. Heading over the dunes though is where this truly wild spot comes into its own with a huge sandy beach to explore you can expect to see Seals in their plentiful as they bob up and down on the entry to the estuary.
This area is teeming in wildlife so its highly recommended to keep your dog on a lead if they like to bound off as you will see for yourself, there are animals around every corner.
When night falls you will hear the hoot of owls right from your overnight parking spot and if you are lucky enough like we were you will even be able to spot one in the trees if you decide to take a dusk stroll through the woods.
It's amazing what you miss in Scotland if you head straight to the NC500, so make sure you don't miss this blissful park up tucked into the East Coast of Scotland.

We hope you enjoy it!

A secret we had to share, this beachside overnight spot has been a firm favourite of ours for years. With beautiful sea views, a long sandy beach, facilities and three colour-guided walks, as with most spots we share this is more than just an overnight parking spot. Let's start with the parking and facilities before we share the rest of the riches this spot has to offer. The car park itself is a mixture of flat-level grass and gravel, offering bay parking overlooking the ocean with the shade of trees, giving this a really wild diverse feel. Along the bay front you will find plenty of picnic benches to enjoy alongside 24-hour toilets and bins at the entrance. Part of the forestry commission for Scotland's ‘stay the night’ scheme it only costs £7 to park overnight, given the fact there aren't any local businesses to support in the vicinity of the car park this provides a great way to give back. The water itself is a fabulous wild swimming spot with beautifully clear waters. Or for those not brave enough, a sandy beach on which to sit and seal spot, we have seen many a bobbing head which makes this a wildlife watchers haven. If you have more energy or a dog that needs walking like us then you are spoiled for choice with not one, not two, but three colour guided walks including the addition of a 7.6km path which leads you all the way to Carrick Castle. The green coloured walk will take you along the waters edge of Glenfinart Burn with a variety of trees straight above as your shelter. This walk is 1.3km long, entirely flat and will take you approximately half an hour. Alternatively if you want something a little further with expansive views then you can choose from either the red or yellow colour graded walks, both with some hills to climb which result in breath taking views from high above. The red birchwood trail is 1.6km and will take you approximately 45 mins, the yellow Lairds trail is the furthers at 3.3k and will take you approximately 1 hour. Having walked all three trails we can highly recommend them all. With so many people heading straight to the NC500 these magical little gems are often missed, don't make the same mistake! This is a spot you have to add to your vanlife adventures, trust me you won't be disappointed. Don't forget to check out or other posts, where we share some of the best overnight vanlife spots we've discovered on our travels around the UK. We hope you enjoy!

Published: October 2024 Overnight parking by the beach is a vanlife dream, with very few campsites offering the same views and opportunity we are sharing our favourite spots all with ‘allowed’ overnight parking to not only give you peace of mind but also a cost-effective way to enjoy the magical coastal spots in Scotland. Starting in the South of Scotland we recently discovered one of our favourite beach side overnight parking spots, a breathtaking seaside setting, the Isle of Whithorn. Driving through the little harbour village to the end of the peninsula you will find a huge level car park owned by the Steampacket Inn which you pass on your way through only minutes before arriving at the car park. Here you are welcomed to park up overnight and truly enjoy all this little spot has to offer. When we stayed we were joined by fellow campervanners including cyclists who had pitched tents further back on the grass for the evening. Rich in history this spot offers not only expansive ocean views but so much to see and do, much more than you would expect from such a quaint little harbour. First let's cover where you stay then we will take you onto what you can do. Recently levelled with a gravel base, you will find both flat and plentiful parking. The car park has plenty of huge wheelie bins for both general waste and recycling, which as we all know is a huge plus when travelling in a van…rubbish really does build up, doesn't it! Just outside the car park you will also find, a fresh drinking water tap, a FREE chemical waste disposal point for your toilet, along with a singular 24-hour toilet for those without facilities. All the facilities you could need when travelling in your van around Scotland. Now we have to talk about the pub itself, without which this stay wouldn't be possible. The Steam Packet Inn is a traditional family owned village pub with two bars and outside harbourside seating. To ensure the continued use of this overnight spot we highly recommend a visit to the pub as a way to pay back for your stay. They offer an extensive menu which is fairly priced and the quality second to none. Plus incredible portion sizes which give exceptional value. I mean where else can you get an open lobster sandwich right by the sea for only £9! It has to be said though the jewel in the crown for us has to be the in-house micro brewed range of ales they sell both in the Pub and available as bottles or cans to take away. We tried a few whilst we stayed but the Summer Isle was our favourite. If you want more then sea views and a stunning pub visit then don't worry, there is even more to enjoy. From the carpark you only have to wonder a minute away for an almost 360 degree ocean view. With two bays directly opposite each other this is one of the only overnight spots we have found that offers beaches on both sides. If you enjoy cold water swimming, fishing or sea glass collecting, then you have found your heaven. Alongside these natural delights you will also find St Ninians Chapel built in 1100 where you walk in the steps of hundreds of pilgrims from years before. In part ruin this chapel still holds the magical feeling left behind by all those who have passed through before. Rich in history the St Ninian chapel was built for not only local worshippers but also to serve as a resting place for pilgrims on their way through to the St Ninian shrine in Whithorn itself. St Ninian was Scotland's first saint who brought Christianity to Scotland way back in 397, dying in 431, Whithorn became his final resting place. To truly immerse yourself in the historically religious spot there exists a modern witness cairn where pilgrams and visitors are invited to leave stones which many have done in their hundreds. With either messages for those passed on or affirmations for what will be this sacred spot holds a feeling you often only read about in books. Christian or not, a prayer feels like it holds power in this sacred space. Isle of Whithorn is more then just an overnight spot, its a whole adventure for the eyes, feet, heart and mind. We hope you enjoy and make sure to check out our other posts for more amazing overnight spots not just in Scotland but across the whole of the UK.

"Vanlife in the UK is impossible..." is something we hear all the time. But after years of exploring in our campervan, we've found the opposite to be true. Vanlife UK might look different to Europe, but with low-cost campsites, Brit Stops, and the support of small businesses, we've discovered some of the most incredible places to stay while giving something back along the way.
We make the most of:
β¨ Low-cost campsites – often back to basics, which means being self-contained helps
β¨ Our trusty Brit Stops membership, which we genuinely wouldn't be without
β¨ Contribution-based stays and local initiatives
β¨ Small businesses that welcome overnight guests
β¨ Forestry and Land Scotland's Stay the Night scheme
β¨ And we've heard Forestry England is trialling six car parks this summer at £15 a night
Slowly exploring the UK, we've never run out of places to stay or beautiful spots to experience. Along the way, we've met some of the loveliest people – farmers opening their fields, landlords welcoming us overnight, and locals eager to share their knowledge and favourite places.
For us, travel has never been about what's free. It's about having the freedom to travel. And thanks to all the people and places that make it possible, the UK feels impossible to leave.
One day we'll venture overseas, but for now, the UK has our heart β€οΈ

Vanlife in Scotland is made so easy thanks to the fantastic motorhome facilities and overnight parking options dotted across the country. If you’ve been following our recent motorhome adventures, you’ll know we’ve discovered some real gems – and the Falkirk Wheel is definitely one to add to the list.
π Dedicated motorhome parking directly opposite the Falkirk Wheel
π· £18 per night
πΏ Toilets, showers and an Elsan point
βοΈ 10% off breakfast in the café
The Falkirk Wheel is one of Scotland’s most unique attractions and the world’s only rotating boat lift. Opened in 2002, it reconnects the Forth & Clyde Canal with the Union Canal, lifting boats 24 metres using an ingenious design that uses the same amount of energy as boiling just a few kettles.
If you’re planning a Scotland road trip or travelling by campervan or motorhome, this is a brilliant overnight stop and a great base for exploring Falkirk and the Scottish canals.

π We thought we'd found the perfect Edinburgh motorhome stopover... then our plans changed completely.
If you're looking for Edinburgh motorhome parking, campervan overnight parking near Edinburgh, Scotland road trip tips, or motorhome-friendly places to stay in Scotland, this unexpected find might be exactly what you're looking for.
After exploring Perth and Stirling, Edinburgh was the final city on our Scotland itinerary. The original plan was simple: park overnight at Newcraighall Park & Ride, jump on the train, and be in Edinburgh city centre in just 11 minutes.
At 50p to park the motorhome and with overnight stays allowed, it seemed almost too good to be true.
But then we stumbled across something we hadn't planned for...
A spot at Archerfield Walled Gardens, which has dedicated overnight parking spaces for motorhomes and campervans with your Britstops membership. Suddenly our quick stopover turned into a much more memorable stay.
This is one of the things we love about travelling Scotland by motorhome. Just when you think you've got the route planned, you find somewhere unexpected that completely changes your plans for the better.
Scotland really does make life easy for motorhome and campervan travellers. Between affordable parking, welcoming stopovers, and great public transport links into cities like Edinburgh, exploring by van feels refreshingly straightforward ππΌ

Scotland motorhome travel is PURE magic π¬π§β¨ From hidden campervan spots to welcoming vanlife stays, Scotland has completely blown away the myth that it’s “anti-vanlife.” We’ve discovered some incredible motorhome stopovers across the Scottish Highlands — from donation-based campsites to free overnight parking and unique hosted stays. If you’re planning a Scotland road trip, campervan adventure or motorhome tour, trust us… this country is one of the best places for vanlife in the UK ππ΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ Ώ

£16 a night > We booked this π΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ Ώ campsite for one reason only: a cheap pitch with electric hook-up ππΌ But this little stop on our Scotland road trip delivered so much more.
After leaving Smoo Cave, we decided not to continue further north on the NC500. Instead, we cut across the Highlands via the A838 towards one of our favourite wild camping spots on Scotland’s east coast. Honestly, this is one of the most underrated drives in the Highlands – the kind of route that turns a simple journey into a full-on adventure.
Before heading off-grid, we needed to reset the van with a few essentials, so we booked into Grannie’s Heilan’ Hame Holiday Park for our first night on the East Coast of Scotland. Not usually our kind of campsite, but for the price it was exactly what we needed.
What we definitely weren’t expecting? The campsite sits right on one of the best dolphin spotting beaches π€― We headed down for coffee cup cocktails on the beach, fully expecting a quiet evening… then suddenly dolphins were swimming right in front of us. We’ve been travelling Scotland for years and this was our very first dolphin sighting π¬
Throw in some very questionable (but highly entertaining) evening disco vibes π and we were fully reset for the next adventure.
Our final stop was another favourite: parked up in the dune car park by our go-to seal spotting beach. Overnight parking is allowed for one night, and it’s yet another reminder that Scotland is still one of the best places for vanlife, wild camping, and road trip adventures ππ¨ If you want all the details then make sure you are following along for our next post.
Save this for your next Scotland road trip π
Vanlife in Scotland doesn’t get much better than this πποΈ Just £10 a night to stay at Knockan Crag on the NC500, with panoramic Highland views, 24-hour toilets, and one of the best nature trails in Scotland.
If you’re planning a Scotland road trip or NC500 adventure, this is a stop you need to save π
Knockan Crag is famous for its unique layered rock formations, where younger rock sits on top of older rock (yes, the wrong way round π€―). As you climb, you’ll pass information points explaining the geology and history of the area, turning the walk into part adventure, part open-air museum.
The accessible path takes around 30 minutes to reach the top and rewards you with breathtaking views across the Scottish Highlands. Even on a grey day, this place is seriously impressive.
Heading just over an hour further north is Smoo Cave, one of the most iconic stops on the NC500.
Top tip: park in the larger car park just 2 minutes away, as the Smoo Cave car park is tiny with limited spaces.
The cave itself is free to visit and features a waterfall flowing directly into the cave π I mean… beach, caves, waterfall, coastal walks… what more could you want?
I was honestly a little nervous about how busy the NC500 would be after hearing so much about overcrowding, but our experience couldn’t have been more different. We visited on a Friday afternoon and had Smoo Cave completely to ourselves for part of the visit ππΌ
Scotland vanlife, wild camping spots, and road trip views like this are exactly why we keep coming back.
Follow along to see where we head next π
Looking for one of the best campsites on the NC500 with proper wild camping vibes? Firemore Campsite is easily one of our favourite places to stay in Scotland.
We posted a photo from here recently and accidentally triggered the Facebook Parking Police π¨π Apparently we were illegally parked and also banned from using the words “wild camping.” Slight flaw in their investigation… they had absolutely no idea where we actually were π€£π
πFiremore Campsite is located on Scotland’s stunning west coast, just steps from huge sandy beaches and sea views that honestly don’t look real.
For just £10 per night (honesty box at the gate), you can park up or pitch up in the fields beside the beach and enjoy one of the most scenic campervan stops in Scotland.
Facilities are minimal — just bins — which is exactly why we love it. Just peace, waves and sunsets.
This is why we love vanlife in Scotland. From Forestry 'Stay the Night' spots to private landowners, aires, businesses and campsites like this, there are endless incredible places to stay. We are currently parked up in another spot on the east Coast of Scotland. In the woods, by a beach...with a sign saying 'welcome to stay for one night' βΊοΈ
Which is why after 8 years of travelling Scotland by campervan, we’ve mapped all our favourite overnight spots into one easy-to-use map πΊοΈ
Including campsites, service points, showers, viewpoints, distilleries and more — lifetime access for £12.99...to make life easier for fellow explorers like ourselves.
If you stay at Firemore, don’t miss Inverewe Gardens nearby πΏ A must-visit on any NC500 road trip.
Save this for your next Scotland road trip, North Coast 500 adventure or campervan holiday in Scotland.
β¨ Plockton, Scotland is a must-visit for any campervan or motorhome adventure in the Scottish Highlands. If you’re travelling the NC500 or planning a Scotland road trip, save this incredible overnight stop in Plockton Harbour. We found this gem on Park4Night and honestly couldn’t believe the views when we arrived.
Parking is contribution-based, so please make sure you pay—your contribution helps maintain the 24-hour toilet facilities onsite π
Waking up parked in the harbour car park with views across the water is pretty special. From here, take a walk along the waterfront until the road curves uphill, then follow signs to the viewpoint. Even on a cloudy day, the views are unreal. On the way back, follow the higher track for beautiful bird’s-eye views across the village and coastline.
The local café is clearly a favourite (for good reason). We couldn’t resist stopping for homemade cake, and ice cream served in waffle cones—because 'paper' cones just don’t compare π¦
For lunch or dinner, don’t skip the local chippy. We both ordered haddock and it was huge, fresh, and easily some of the best fish we’ve had on our Scotland travels.
After that, it was time for beers with a view π» The hotel/pub also serves food, but there’s only so much two people can eat in 24 hours π
Our next stop was Beinn Eighe Visitor Centre, part of the Forestry and Land Scotland Stay the Night scheme. We expected it to be much busier, but it was peaceful, scenic, and surrounded by stunning greens, yellows, and mountain views. There are also several easy, level walks with incredible views towards the snow-capped peaks.
This is a fully wild stop with no facilities, but nearby you’ll find a contribution-based service point in the village to refill, empty, and reset before your next adventure.
Save this spot for your next Scotland campervan trip ποΈ and make sure you are following along for more Scotland campervan adventures. We have so much more to share ππΌ
We weren’t disappointed πβ¨ We found an absolute gem for exploring the Scottish Highlands.
πLoch Ness Caravan Park, Scotland
A relatively new site, open for just 4 years, and honestly one of the loveliest stops we’ve found while travelling Scotland by motorhome.
For £25 per night, you get:
π Electric hook-up
π§ Water
β»οΈ Waste disposal points
ποΈ Bins
β¨ An immaculate, well-kept site
But what really makes this place special is the welcome. The owners are so friendly and welcoming, making you feel at home almost instantly.
And the location? Hard to beat. You’re just a short walk from both Fort Augustus and Loch Ness, with plenty to explore nearby. In the opposite direction, you can walk to Lady Falls – a beautiful waterfall with an amazing wild swimming spot (definitely worth a visit ποΈ).
As we travel around Scotland in our motorhome, we’re always looking for great places to stay that also support local tourism and communities. Whether it’s community campsites, local aires, or Forestry and Land Scotland Stay the Night Scheme locations, there are so many brilliant options for campervans and motorhomes.
We love sharing these finds to help you plan your own Scotland campervan road trip and discover amazing stopovers along the way β€οΈ

Most people drive straight past this spot… πποΈπLoch Tulla Viewpoint, Glencoe, Scotland
If you’re planning a Scotland road trip, travelling by campervan or exploring vanlife in Scotland, this is one spot you need to save.
After a few full-on adventure days, we wanted somewhere peaceful to park the motorhome, switch off and recharge before hiking Glencoe Mountain Resort the next morning.
And wow… waking up here felt unreal π€―
Like our motorhome window had turned into a painting.
π Parking tip:
Don’t park in the first part of the layby as it’s mostly used by coaches and people stopping for quick photos. Drive through to the back where there’s a much larger gravel car park, better suited for campervans and motorhomes.
π
Sunset here is unreal and easily one of our favourite Scotland vanlife views so far.
Next stop: Glencoe Mountain Resort — one of our favourite hikes for any Scottish Highlands road trip.
Useful info if staying overnight:
• Overnight parking available with donation box
• Levelling ramps recommended
• Showers: £1 for 5 mins
• Elsan point: £5 (ask in café)
This is such a good stop for anyone doing vanlife Scotland, a campervan road trip in Scotland, or searching for the best motorhome stops in Glencoe.

Don't make this mistake when doing Vanlife in Scotland...We nearly drove straight past these spots!!
If you’re looking for the best campervan overnight stops in Scotland, motorhome park ups, wild-feel camping spots, or hidden gems for vanlife in Scotland, add these two Forestry and Land Scotland Stay the Night locations to your list.
πStop 1: Ardgartan, Arrochar
Part of the Forestry and Land Scotland Stay the Night scheme and easily one of the most peaceful campervan spots in Scotland.
π¦ Park just over the bridge and you’ll find access to the most beautiful stream — perfect for a cold water dip and the dreamiest sound to wake up to.
π² Follow the signposted woodland loop walk along the river. At the bottom, leave the route and head down the path beside the hotel. Walk along the loch for 5 minutes and you’ll discover a hidden gem… two stunning swings with incredible loch views and total silence.
π½οΈ For sunset, head down the left side of the stream where picnic benches are dotted along the water’s edge. Easily one of the best outdoor dinner spots we’ve found in Scotland.
πStop 2: Bridge of Orchy
One of our favourite overnight motorhome stops in Scotland and somehow even better on our second visit.
We first stayed here in November during snowfall, so coming back in a different season felt special. This time? Deer grazing just feet from our van, mountain views for miles, and even a rainbow over the hills πποΈ
π Bonus: this location has an elsan point, which is a game changer for vanlife Scotland.
Vanlife tip from a fellow camper: if the cassette disposal point has no water, use a little grey water to rinse your cassette. Not glamorous… but very practical π

What a find — a true hidden gem in Scotland for motorhome and campervan travel πβ¨
If you’re planning a Scotland road trip or travelling by motorhome or campervan, add Greenock to your list. Parked right along Greenock Harbour, this is one of those rare motorhome stopovers where you get the best of both worlds: incredible sea views from your van and a vibrant Scottish town packed with everything you need.
From scenic harbour walks and fascinating maritime history to shopping, restaurants, cafés and local attractions, Greenock surprised us in the best way. You could easily spend hours exploring the waterfront before settling back into your campervan with mountain views, fresh sea air and city lights at night.
When travelling Scotland, it’s easy to rush straight to the NC500, Scottish Highlands or Isle of Skye (we’ve done it too), but slowing down and exploring the west coast of Scotland and hidden gems in the south has completely changed how we travel.
Greenock has quickly become one of our favourite Scotland motorhome stops. Friendly locals, holiday vibes, coastal views and a brilliant campervan parking spot? Yes please.
After soaking up the buzz of town life, we headed off for something quieter. Wild swimming, woodland walks and a secret swing with breathtaking views π²π¦

Not before stopping for some supplies. Vintage Irn Bru in a Glass bottle. No exaggeration—it tastes DIFFERENT. If you’re coming to Scotland, don’t skip this!

Motorhome Makeover Part 3 πβ¨ | Campervan Renovation & Budget Van Life Upgrades
If you’re looking for campervan renovation ideas, motorhome makeover inspiration, or budget-friendly van life upgrades, this is your sign to start! Small, simple changes can completely transform your campervan interior and make it feel like a true home on wheels.
This week we started renovating the motorhome bathroom (toilet & shower)πΏ There’s still a long way to go, but it’s already such a big improvement. I’m obsessed with these tiles and planning to style the space with copper fixtures for that warm, modern finish.
π Question: Can you paint plastic in a campervan bathroom? Any tips or product recommendations would be amazing!
We’ve also started updating the campervan cupboards , in the living room, with inlays. I went for the quickest job first (because… patience isn’t my strength π
), but now I’m not 100% sure on the pattern. We plan on painting the cupboard doors (like the kitchen), which I hoping will make the design pop? Or should we rethink it? Let me know π
With Scotland road trip plans on the horizon ποΈ, it’s been frustrating not hitting the road—but at least we’re making progress on these van life DIY projects. This is exactly why we chose a motorhome over a full van conversion—less downtime, more adventures, and we can still live in it while upgrading!

Moments that felt like life hacksβ¨...motorhome living lends itself to a simple life but one that feels rich in the little ways.
Hey, I know a few of you are new here so I thought I'd introduce ourselves. I'm Kez and together with Trist and our dog Frank and cat Murphy we've been travelling the UK full time for almost 3 years first in our 39 year old campervan Old Gertie and now in our 23 Ford Motorhome Big Bertie. Having not left the UK in almost 10 years we have found ways to re-fall back in love with this little island time and time again.
We thought full-time Vanlife would be all about travel but it's so much more of an adventure then you can anticipate. It will change and challenge you in ways you would never expect. You will feel richer even when living with less because the appreciation and gratitude you have for the things you once took for granted grows in ways you couldn't imagine.
We share our journey to help others looking to enjoy the same way of life. We hope you enjoy it with us π

We’re talking cosy textures, smart storage, aesthetic details, and practical upgrades that turn a standard motorhome into a custom campervan interior you actually love living in.

Part 3 of renovating our motorhome on a budget β¨ Proving that converting a van isn't the only way to create a customised home on wheels. Big Bertie has the space we need, we just need to make it match our taste. We've already shown you the simple changes we've made to this point, that, in our opinion have made the biggest difference. Next up, painting the kitchen cupboards and covering the last of the red that the sofa covers couldn't hide.
It's slowly coming together don't you think?
Motorhome life is mainly about adventure and travel for us but doing it in a campervan that feels like a home rather than a van makes all the difference to us.
I'm keen to know if you've added your own touches to your campervan or motorhome? Crazy the difference it can make and so much cheaper then converting one that's for sure!
£3 motorhome stopover in Rye, East Sussex ππ€ parked right opposite the train station — cheap, easy, and surprisingly peaceful.
We woke up in the heart of Rye, one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the UK. Once a major Cinque Port, this place is packed with history — from invasions and smugglers to shifting coastlines (it actually used to sit right on the sea and is now around 2 miles inland π).
There’s loads to explore within walking distance. Wander up to St Mary's Church for incredible views over the rooftops, step back in time at Ypres Tower (often called Rye Castle), or visit Lamb House, once home to authors like Henry James.
The cobbled streets (especially Mermaid Street) are lined with cosy, historic pubs like The Mermaid Inn, The Globe Inn Marsh, and The Old Bell Inn. Perfect after a day exploring π»
If you’re looking for a budget-friendly motorhome stopover in Rye, campervan parking in East Sussex, or a unique overnight stay in a historic English town, this spot is hard to beat. Great location, loads to see, and full of character.
What more can you ask for?!
Side note the carpark is closed to overnight parking on a Wednesday due to a market on Thursday. It can also get quite busy in the day and I'd assume Summer months but there are also two other carparks by the harbour which charge £6 and £10 for an overnight stay.
You're not following us yet but your algorithm thinks you should be βΊοΈ Doing Vanlife in the UK first in a campervan and now in a motorhome has allowed us to put the 'living' back into life. Say hi if you follow along, we love getting to know everyone who joins our little community.
Our motorhome makeover πβ¨ Life in our new motorhome has already been eventful π
Buying a second-hand vehicle, you expect a few teething problems (thankfully covered under warranty by the amazing dealership)… but being completely immobile for days? That part we didn’t plan for.
Luckily, thanks to the kindness of strangers, what could’ve been a disaster turned into something pretty special. Huge thank you to the team at The White Dog Inn for saving us ππΌ We had a safe place to park, incredible food, the cosiest pub vibes, roaring fires, and some beautiful countryside walks. Now that the brakes are (mostly!) fixed, it’s back to the motorhome renovation π§
Next big job, painting the cupboards. Honestly… this has been the most daunting part so far. Everything else felt reversible—but paint? That’s a commitment. At first, I wasn’t convinced by the colour at all… but after a few coats, it’s finally starting to come together and feel like a proper home on wheels π‘π
I cannot WAIT to show you the finished look—and just wait until you see what we’ve got planned for the bathroom π

Want to know what Vanlife is like in the UK, in a campervan or motorhome? Then why not follow our journey. We have recently just upgraded. After doing full-time Vanlife in the UK for 2.5 years in a 39 year old campervan it was time for an upgrade. We went for a 23 year old motorhome and it was the best decision we ever made. We are sharing the full journey of turning the motorhome into our little home on wheels and taking you on adventures all over the UK. Sharing tips and tricks along the way...we show you how much the UK has to offer. The fact we haven't left in 8+ years is testament to all there is to explore, see, do and stay. We share it all with you.

A new home on wheels, new Vanlife adventures but that doesn't mean it's plain sailing. If there is one thing we always say about living Vanlife, expect the unexpected π
Whilst we are decorating the interior of our new motorhome, it turns out we also need a little TLC on the outside too. Amazingly it's all covered by our warranty and although it means we can't move anywhere for a few days it's only temporary. We found an amazing local mechanic who has us booked in on Tuesday and after getting stuck and then towed out of the mud...the universe sent us an angel disguised as a landlady who couldn't have been more welcoming and lovely and has allowed us to park up in her carpark. Kindness really is a beautiful thing.
So whilst the decorating is on hold temporarily we are so grateful that what could have been a stressful situation has actually just been a chance to remind us of the good that exists all around us.
23 years old and 40k miles, the new van was always going to have a few teething problems once it hit the road full-time but nothing that can't be fixed.
We've used the weekend to walk, chill and just enjoy the extra space we now have. It honestly feels like a studio on wheels.
Counting your blessings, of which we have many, is the easiest way to feel like the luckiest people and we feel it in abundance right now.
Side note...if you voted on our stories, thank you but if you didn't, what do you think? Cream/off white or green?
π Free motorhome and campervan overnight parking in Romney Marsh, Kent — this peaceful Brit Stops farm shop stopover on the South Coast of England lets you stay the night for free as part of your membership. They don't demand you spend to stay but they make it EXTREMELY easy to support them ππΌ
Stay the night in your motorhome or campervan at πThe Old Tractor Shed Farm Shop, an Exclusive Brit Stops location that welcomes members for a quiet overnight stop while exploring Romney Marsh and the Kent countryside.
This family-run farm shop is packed with locally sourced produce and everything you could want on your campervan or motorhome road trip:
π₯ Fresh fruit & veg
π₯© Butchers
π₯ Bakers
π§ Local cheeses
π· Wines & beers
π§ Fresh juices and more
They’ve even set up a little coffee area for visitors, and when the farm shop is closed you can still grab supplies from the on-site vending machine stocked with essentials. On arrival we picked up some pickled onions and smoked cheese (highly recommend!) and before leaving grabbed two giant sausage rolls for £4.98 for lunch.
Now tell me… what campsite on the South Coast gives you more than you pay for?
Supporting local farms, small businesses and farm shops while enjoying a free motorhome stopover — that’s a win-win in our book.
πMake sure you SAVE this Brit Stops campervan stopover in Kent to your next campervan or motorhome adventure in the South of England.
Making it ours ππ β€οΈ There are so many things we love about our new van the list is endless. So many 'pinch me' moments the last couple of weeks, the gratitude scale is off the charts. Wasting no time, we've quickly got stuck into personalising the inside to make it really feel like home. Just because some campervans and motorhomes look the same on the outside, doesn't mean that has to be the same on the inside. So much more to show and so much more to decorate but I wanted to share the first few changes we've made and start documenting the start of our epic new adventures. After doing 2.5 years of full-time Vanlife living in Old Gertie we knew we needed more space but I don't think either of us realised the difference it would make. We are so excited to see where this year takes us but one thing we do know...it's going to be epic and we can't wait to take you all along for the ride π«ΆπΌ
Converting a van was never going to be the route for us — but decorating one? That’s right up our street πβ¨
It’s amazing what you can do with adhesive vinyl these days. A quick, affordable campervan or motorhome interior upgrade for under £10 and it completely transforms the space. Budget-friendly even renter-friendly, and perfect for adding personality to your motorhome without a full van conversion.
We’ve always loved putting our own stamp on our campervans — from easy DIY decor hacks to small space styling ideas. Those little custom touches turn a standard van into a cosy home on wheels.
Proof that you don’t need a full van build to create a beautiful, personalised van life interior π€
Goodbye to our dear old friend, Old Gertie π This beautiful 38 year old Talbot has been our home on wheels for the last 2.5 years π€ She's done us proud but two adults and two animals in a tiny space has a time limit...it was time to upgrade.
We are now the proud owners of a Ford Transit. Still sticking with the oldies but the goodies, Old Gerties big brother/sister is a spritely 23 years old. With only 40,000 miles on the clock, it's raring and ready for many Vanlife adventures to come β€οΈ
Thank you for all the messages of love on our last reel, we hope you've all enjoyed Old Gertie as much as we have. She is a character. However I hope you continue to follow our Vanlife journey in our new home ππΌ
P.S if you want to know more about the buying journey then we covered it all in our vlog, link in the bio x
Every ending brings a new beginning β€οΈ Old Gertie has done us proud over the last 2.5 years of Vanlife in the UK. Our little home on wheels carried us through countless vanlife adventures across the UK. She taught us so much about life on the road, slow minimalist living, and finding home wherever we parked up. We’ll never forget the years spent gallivanting around in the old girl — she’s a true character, that’s for sure.
Now it's time to begin a new adventure in a new home...
Sshhhh it's a secret π€« One we can't WAIT to share with you! After two and half years of Vanlife'ing around the UK in Old Gertie, big changes are about to happen. There's been a lot of moving cogs behind the scenes and in between it all we've been working flat out and navigating this delightful wet weather front almost everyone's been dealing with.
Sorry to be vague but we've learned through life's hard knocks to not believe anything 100% until it happens so I hope you can bare with us whilst we take the final steps towards, what for us, is a dream.
2026 is going to be a good year, we can feel it in our bones. So even though this post might leave you feeling like your guessing, I promise all will be revealed soon.
We hope you will wish us luck and send lots of positivity...big things are about to happen.
Love Trist, Kez, Frank, Murphy and the beautiful Old Gertie π
This will the UK in March, spring is slowly loading πΈπ Physically, we’re still dealing with the wet side of a UK winter something every campervan and motorhome owner knows all too well. But mentally? We’re already soaking up that early spring light and dreaming of warmer, drier days. This was our third winter living and travelling in our campervan in the UK. It hasn’t been the coldest, but it’s easily felt like the wettest and rain is the real test of winter motorhome life BUT Longer days are finally creeping in, the light is changing, and we’re ready to enjoy some warmer slow travel days. Who's with me? π€
Why pay for a campsite when you can pay for some drinks or delicious food from a pub and stay the night. In the Summer you can park on the grass and the facilities both inside and outside the pub are outstanding. From a camping perspective you have an elsan point, bins, fresh water and 24 hour toilets!! Inside the pub you have the choice of three bars, comfy sofas and screens for the sports enthusiasts. This is an outstanding family run business that we couldn't recommend highly enough.
A 15 minute walk to a sandy beach and a 4 minute drive to the Eden project πThe Britannia Inn, St Austell
A motorhome or campervan -ers dream ππΌπ
100,000 miles, a milestone for Old Gertie. That's roughly 35,000 miles explored in the last two and a half years ππΌππΌShe maybe old but the girls got stamina πͺπΌπͺπΌGranted she's had a few hiccups, to be expected in a 38 year old campervan but she has also taken us from the south of England all the way furthest north and from east to west. These old Talbot's are little tanks, what is it they say...they don't make them like they used too ππ
Tintagel in Cornwall know how to welcome Campervans and Motorhomes π Staying overnight in the little village is a dream. Choose from one of three carparks, from a charge of £8 for 24 hours to £12 you can park up safe and securely and enjoy your time exploring this historical, mystical and beautiful area. The King Arthur carpark is the most expensive but does also come with additional facilities (you will need proof of parking in the carpark to use these and there is an additional charge). Elsan points, bins, drinking water, toilets and showers! Everything you could need. Parking is hard standing in the winter but plenty of grass pitches for the Summer.
Placed centrally in the village you can enjoy everything Tintagel has to offer from the collection of pubs, cafes, shops and more. You can also walk to the rugged coastline within minutes and either pick up the coastal path for a sea breeze hike or choose to explore Tintagel castle or Merlins cave.
Driving about 5 minutes out the top of the village you will find a layby to park in for the Rocky Valley loop walk. A hike we highly recommend, the views are breathtaking ππΌ
Have you stayed in Tintagel yet? If not I hope this has helped inspire a visit...you won't be disappointed I promise π
A warm welcome and a wonderful stay on this peaceful little Cornwall countryside campsite, a wonderful way to start or finish your Vanlife or motorhome adventures in Cornwall. πPine Green Holiday park is only £20 a night with electric hookup. All the extra facilities you need...the shower block is fresh and modern and it doesn't have the dreaded push button showers!!! There's even a hair dryer π Incredible price, amazing value, a warm welcome and fabulous views out over Bodmin Moor. What more can you ask for π€
With a lot of campsites closed this time of year we want to share the gems as we find them...especially those that offer such great value for money ππΌone to add to your travel list if you are heading to Cornwall in your campervan or motorhome π
Secret Smugglers Tunnel onto a Secluded Sandy Beach ππΌThank you Devon, what a hidden gem π We found this by chance after heading to Teignmouth for a walk around the Botanical gardens. I imagine its a spot that's popular in the Summer which is why exploring the west country in the winter is always such a win. You get to enjoy all the beauty without any of the crowds. The Ness pub which is only a few hundred metres away is also an incredible spot to enjoy the view! A location to add to your travel plans of your heading through or near Devon π
Some days vanlife living honestly feels like you’re living the dream — slow mornings with coffee and a view, sunset dinners by the sea, and the kind of freedom the campervan lifestyle is all about. Other days… you sit there wondering how you ended up here and questioning every life choice you’ve ever made ππ€£ And that’s just the reality of living in a van full time.
It’s so easy to look at someone’s life online and assume they’ve got it all figured out, especially in the world of van life and digital nomad living. But don’t ever be fooled into thinking anyone’s life is without problems — it never is. Whether you live in a house or you’re deep into your van life journey, everyone has their struggles.
Life works on a scale. For every breathtaking view, spontaneous adventure, and peaceful off-grid moment, there can be challenges that shake you a little — broken heaters, bad weather, small space living, self-doubt, or just one of those days where everything feels harder than it should. That’s the part of this alternative lifestyle people don’t always talk about.
But those moments are also what makes it real. They teach you resilience, gratitude and perspective so even on the tough days you're still choosing freedom, growth and life that feels aligned...that to us, is always worth it π«ΆπΌπ
Vanlife in the UK is not only possible it's awesome. We have travelled the UK in our T5 and for the last almost 3 years full-time in Old Gertie our 36 year old campervan and home on wheels. We share all the best places to stay and locations you have to visit. So if you want to know what it's like travelling and exploring the UK only in a campervan or motorhome then why not follow along on the adventures βΊοΈ
What a find β¨ Nestled In the heart of Cornwall at Piece, between Redruth, Camborne, and Four lanes we found the most incredible @britstops πThe Countryman Inn.
The weather had turned and we were just looking for somewhere sheltered to spend the night and squirrel ourselves away in a pub for the evening. Little did we know the treat we were in for! This gorgeous little country Cornish pub is the heart of the community. With something happening almost every night from quizzes to karaoke and bands. We couldn't believe our luck that we had picked a night that a group of local musicians came to play a Cornish session. From 8.30 onwards more and more people rambled through the doors with instruments in hand, quickly jumping in and joining the tunes.
It's a pub that you walk into feeling like a stranger and are welcomed like a regular β€οΈ if you are heading to Cornwall in your campervan or motorhome or just passing through the area on a road trip then you HAVE to add this stop to your list. We've heard good things about their Sunday roasts too so will most certainly be making a return visit ππΌ
Save this post for your next winter camping trip to Cornwall. One thing we've found since travelling around Cornwall the last couple of weeks...A LOT of campsites are closed and the ones that are open are charging extortionate prices for this time of year. We've been mixing it up with Park4night and Britstops but we always need a campsite in between to top up our batteries (lacking the solar this time of year), empty our toilet and fill up our water tanks. The regular tasks of Vanlife living.
Finding good value campsites has been tricky which is why we have to give Sunset Camping at Redruth a shout out. For only £22 you get all the facilities plus electric hookup. The vibe is soooo friendly and even though it's a little campsite the pitches are generously sized and spaced which is fab. Dog friendly and you can also have an off the ground campfire which seems to be becoming a rare thing these days.
Added to the fact it's only roughly a 30 minute walk into Redruth a historic mining town with an Aldi even closer you have everything you need and more then you could want.
If you don't fancy camping (someone actually pitched up in a tent when we were there, soooo brave) and don't have a motorhome or campervan then they also have you covered offering little pods to stay in also.
One worth saving we reckon βΊοΈand we hope it helps you on your own travels around Cornwall.
Week 3 of 2026 - Vanlife in Cornwall β¨ It has to be said, Tintagel is simply the best when it comes to accommodating campervans and motorhomes. Three carparks all allow overnight parking from £8 to £12 for 24 hours. The King Arthur carpark even has toilets, showers, waste point and fresh water for an extra charge! The village is a little stunner to wander, make sure you pick up a pasty from the bakers on the corner...delicious ππΌAdded to the fact you can walk down to Tintagel castle and Merlin's cave (when the tides out) makes this an all around winner. Drive just 6 minutes out of town and you can park up on the layby and follow the path to the Rocky Valley which if you follow up and round takes you on a big loop along the coast and back to your van. Padstow was just as beautiful, a gorgeous little port with cafes, shops and restaurants. You can also catch a passenger ferry across to Rock for £6 and adult with dogs allowed too! Next onto Redruth. We found a brilliant little campsite for £22 with EHU and only a 30 minute walk into the town. Where to next? Follow along to find out π«ΆπΌπ
We're travelling the whole of the UK in our campervan and sharing it with you. Sure Vanlife might be easier in Europe but we are showing you how it's not only possible in the UK but also amazing. The UK has a lot more to offer then you might think...we've not left in over 7 years and are still finding new places to explore and stay βΊοΈ
All the location details are in the caption, make sure you save this post for your own travels to the west country.
Britstops is always our go to on long travel days. It just removes the stress of finding a park up and who doesn't want a cheeky pint after a long drive...having dinner cooked for you, well that's the added bonus.
We stopped at the White Horse Inn just outside Exeter in Woodbury Salterton. A huge flat carpark opposite fields. Definitely one to visit in the Summer as it has a huge beer garden to enjoy. The pub however was just as nice, large but still cosy and a huge menu for selection.
After a peaceful night (it is next to a main road but this falls quiet overnight) we decided to stop in at Teignmouth which was only a 30 minute drive away. We'd read about the Botanical Gardens and wanted to check them out.
It turns out Teignmouth is absolutely gorgeous. The gardens are just a slice. Stunning coast line, seaview pubs, quaint little cafes. It's a real stunner. A spot I'd imagine is heaving in the Summer (another reason we opted for winter in the west country). It wasn't until idling back to Old Gertie we saw the sign for the Smugglers tunnel. Open to the public you follow it all the way down and out through the rock face to a secluded sandy beach. Very cool!
We did have plans to make it to Cornwall but the day ran away with us so we opted for a Britstops only 7 minutes drive away. The Church House Inn, in Stokeinteignhead. Such a friendly welcome (we always call ahead) the owners couldn't of been more helpful or friendly. The building itself is over 800 years old, a proper oldy worldy pub with a huge log fire. Perfect! The chips btw are something else. I know it seems odd to rave about something so simple but they do something magical with theirs.
Two stops and one fab day out. Not bad for what was meant to be travel days βΊοΈ We are now firmly in Cornwall and can't wait to share what it's like to winter Vanlife in the West country ππ«ΆπΌ
Why are you seeing this reel? Because you want to know what it's like living in a 36 year old campervan, exploring every inch of the UK...at least that's my guess βΊοΈ We are currently exploring the west country on our 3rd Winter doing Vanlife. Maybe it's nature that excites you or simply living that intrigues you. Or it could just be that adventure is what you've been seeking. Either way, why not follow along on our little life journey. You never know it might spark something in you...at the very least we hope it will entertain you.
Drop us a ππ«ΆπΌin the comments of our recent reel of you are joining us on this journey. We'd love to say Hi ππΌ
A Campsite Deal worth sharing ππΌ Winter Vanlife in the UK always requires a campsite stop (at least it does for us) with lacking solar power and the need for other resources like fresh water, waste points and rubbish bins it's unavoidable. However with so many campsites hiking their prices, it becomes something of a minefield to find the ones with the most value.
Not only is Setthorns @campingnewforest in the New Forest amazing value it's also an incredible location. Parked up in the middle of the woods it gives the feel of wild camping π²π³be prepared to share your pitch with free roaming ponies and enjoy some deer watching as the sunsets. If you've followed us for a while you will know how much we love the New Forest and this campsite is one of the reasons why.
Get 3 nights for the price of 2 with code WINTERSTAY...a discount we felt worth shouting about.
Let us know if you've been before? Or are planning a trip in the future. We can recommend so many amazing things to do and see in New Forest so feel free to pick our brains βΊοΈ
Our travels have taken us further west and we already have so much to share. Visiting Cornwall in the winter means you avoid the crowds but still get to enjoy the beauty and we can't wait to share it all with you π«ΆπΌπ
Trying to fit van life into normal living can be hard.
It rubs in places you don’t expect. We loved Christmas we really did, moving between family but it also made the absence louder. No home of our own. No door to open. No space to host. No where for our family or friends to come with the invitation of 'stay as long as you want'.
Van life asks you to rely on others during these seasons. On their kindness. On their resources. On their patience. A washing machine. A socket. A place to fill water. Small things, but heavy sometimes. No one makes us feel this way — it comes from inside. Comparison sneaks in. Joy quietly slips away.
Stepping back into “normal” living messes with your head. It makes you question your choices.
If freedom is worth the discomfort. I wobbled there. More me than Trist. Doubt lingered quietly.
Then we returned to nature. Open space. Green trees. Wide sky. The noise fell away. The questions faded.
This is why we choose van life...
To be free.
To move.
To explore.
Not because it’s easy —
because it feels true π«ΆπΌπ
Here's to another year of Vanlife, 2026 is going to be a good year β¨
They say it's impossible to do Vanlife in the UK but we are proof that not only is it entirely do-able it's one hell of an adventure. So much to see, so much to do and we share all our travel with you. Over the last 7 years we've explored England, Scotland and Wales and still stumble upon magic we haven't discovered before. It's a minimalist way of living for a maximum lifestyle. Why not check out our profile and see if you want to follow along on our journey, we'd love to have you along for the ride βΊοΈπ
It feels like we discovered one of Scotland's best kept secrets. You wouldn't believe these beautiful falls hide behind a little Scottish village in the Highlands. Only a ten minute walk through the woods that creates the back drop of this village in the mountains you will find the grey mares tail waterfall. With a wooden walkway and climbing ropes you are able to walk straight to the falls and suspend yourself above the water as it rushes beneath you. Truly a magical feeling. Discovering gems like this are why we love Scotland so much, there's so much more to discover then you could ever realise. The fact that Kinlochleven has also now opened an aire allowing overnight stays for motorhomes and campervans (with EHU) makes it the perfect place to explore.
After visiting and googling to find out more information we also learned that Kinlochleven was the first village in the world to have every house connected to electricity! How incredible is that!!
We didn't even know these falls existed when we planned our stop on the village over night so wanted to share with you so that you too could experience this little hidden gem πβ€οΈ
Do I get an award? The worst Vanlife travel guide in the UK π€Thank heavens for Trist βΊοΈπ I'm not a natural at this but god loves a trier right? π It's a blessing Trist is the one who films and edits out weekly travel vlogs over on YouTube otherwise who knows what you would be getting! If you haven't checked out our videos then make sure you do, I promise they are a calibre above what I can create and should hopefully help you prepare and plan for your own Vanlife adventures. We are currently in the midst of our Scotland series but if you check out the playlists you will find all the other places we've explored in the UK to include helpful Vanlife advice for those thinking about this way of travel or looking to do more.
They say don't work with animals or children...maybe that should include Kez π
Happy Wednesday folks, let us know if you check out our channel, which video do you like the best? (And please don't forget to subscribe, that one little click from you can create a giant leap for us ππ₯³)
Also is there a video on a topic or location you want us to create? Any and all ideas welcome π€
Was it for the better?
Selling everything we owned at 40 and moving into our tiny campervan Old Gertie felt like a huge risk but also an opportunity we couldn't miss out on.
Life moves so fast, moments becoming memories before you've even reminded yourself to experience them. In a world that propels you forward, paced to race to the finish we wanted to find a way to slow it all down. To experience more. Going backwards felt like a great way to try. Starting from scratch with a map of experiences to gather over a spreadsheet of targets. Sure maybe we should have chosen to start saving or investing. That's what grown ups do right? Adulting. Preparing. For a tomorrow, down the road, that might never come.
BUT we don't want tomorrow to be our happy place, we want that today.
Living simply plants you back into the moment in so many ways. Everyday, every moment, it's an experience.
So living Vanlife we might not be rich in the material sense but we feel like we are truly living ππ«ΆπΌand that's a wealth no one can take away from you.
As they say...you only live once.
Waking up to a new adventure πβοΈβ You always know how the day starts, but never how it will go—or where it will end. At first, that uncertainty can feel scary, but once you lean into it, freedom like this will feel unbelievable.
Vanlife teaches you to live fully in the moment—and that’s where the real magic hides. β¨
Old Gertie πβ€οΈ
“Don’t you realise how lucky we are?” βοΈπβ¨
Winter vanlife in the UK isn’t rubbish — it’s quietly, breathtakingly beautiful. There’s a soft romance in watching the world shift through our campervan windows, in seeing the seasons repaint the landscape in their own time. Frosted fields, misty mornings, moody skies… winter turns everything into poetry if you slow down long enough to notice.
Out here, the cold doesn’t just test us — it shapes us. It asks us to bundle closer, breathe deeper, listen more. Wrapped in blankets, sharing warm mugs with cold hands, we realise just how fortunate we are to witness nature’s quiet magic from the heart of our tiny rolling home.
Some days the world feels silver and hushed. Other days it feels wild and alive. But every day reminds us that beauty isn’t always warm or easy — sometimes it whispers instead of shouts. And those whispers, those gentle lessons in resilience and gratitude, are what make us stronger.
To grow through the seasons.
To love through the challenges.
To find wonder in the simplest moments.
That’s the real gift of winter vanlife.
And truly… how lucky we are. π€πβοΈ
When we first chose life on the road, we didn’t know what to expect. We traded square footage for freedom, routines for spontaneity, and comfort zones for open roads. Now, every day in our campervan feels like a chapter in a story we didn’t even know we were brave enough to write.
We’ve learned to slow down long enough to hear our thoughts again. We’ve learned that getting lost usually means discovering something we never would have found on a map.
Van life isn’t perfect—our home rattles, the weather surprises us, and some nights the closest thing we get to warmth is from candle light. But that’s the beauty of it. These unpolished moments become the memories we talk about the longest. They’re the moments that make us feel alive.
This journey is about choosing experiences over expectations, presence over pressure, and storytelling over perfection. And with every sunrise we chase, every hidden campsite we find, and every quiet night under a sky full of stars, we’re reminded that this lifestyle is our greatest teacher.
When the goal is experience, everything becomes a win — the adventures, the challenges, the stillness, the surprises. And we’re grateful for all of it. π€β¨π
Cosy for Christmas ππβοΈShe may be little but she packs a festive punch. Living in a campervan through the winter can look like madness from the outside but once you step inside it all makes sense. More fairy lights than anyone needs, every candle and lamp lit. Cosy blankets and fluffy slippers. Old Gertie is proof that you don't need much to make a home. We even have a Christmas tree that fits snuggly on a shelf. With each winter spent in Old Gertie we are reminded that this life is so much more than just adventures. It's the experiences which make it just as magical and with each season we learn to be that bit more grateful for everything we have.
Happy 1st December πππ«ΆπΌβ¨
Living in a campervan can look like a life of living with less when in fact you have so much more. Being grateful for the simple things changes your perspective. You learn to appreciate everything you once took for granted. It creates a rich life that's not built on monetary value instead it's a vault load of moments that build it's worth. An ever changing back garden, forever a different view. Its priceless.
Back south for Christmas we feel so lucky that although we get to live wherever we want, our little home on wheels means we never have to miss out on moments with those who mean the most β€οΈ and Today we have been decorating Old Gertie in her full festive set up which we can't wait to share with you all tomorrow π
We hope you've all had a lovely Saturday wherever you are and what ever you are doing π«ΆπΌπ
What's it like? We are going to show you πβοΈAfter spending the most amazing four weeks in Scotland we have driven Old Gertie the 400 miles back down South for Christmas. Living in a van isn't just about travel for us. This is real Vanlife. No route. No plans. No where to be and everywhere to go...winter Vanlife in Old Gertie. Over December we plan on using our Britstops membership to find some cosy, log fired, Christmas themed stop overs whilst mixing it up with some of our favourite low campsites and wild parking spots. We also intend on using our National Trust membership to visit as many locations as we can...their Christmas displays are always epic and it's become a bit of a tradition for us now.
Leave a little heart in the comments if your excited to follow our adventures as we are to share them with you β€οΈππ«ΆπΌ
Winter vanlife, here we go again! βοΈ This will be our third winter living full-time in Old Gertie, and Scotland has already thrown us straight into minus temps, snowy mornings, and a cheeky heater breakdown ππ
With only one gas bottle onboard, it’s basically winter vanlife roulette—of course it ran out right in the middle of the evening. So last night’s “heating system” was candles (COβ monitor always on!) and a mountain of blankets. Top tip: candles under a kettle actually give you hot water in 40 minutes… meaning we still got our morning coffee, which tasted even better today βοΈπ₯
I’m finally in the swing of sharing our winter vanlife adventures more regularly, so come along as we live, travel, and explore the UK in our trusty old campervan. I’ll be posting our daily routines, cozy winter hacks, travel spots, and real behind-the-scenes moments from life on the road. Here’s to frosty mornings, cold-weather challenges, and making the warmest memories in our little rolling home π«ΆπΌπβ¨

Sharing Vanlife secrets… although let’s be honest, it’s not really a secret π€£ You just don’t know these places exist until some overly enthusiastic van dweller (hi, that’s me πβοΈ) tells you.
This spot is yet another gem from Forestry and Land Scotland, who kindly let you park overnight for £10—an absolute bargain considering the waterfall-front property vibes. You even get picnic benches right beside the falls, perfect if you fancy a wet bottom and a warm soup at the same time π Truly the height of luxury, we jest but it's true for those like minded travellers.
There are three walks starting right from your doorstep (vanstep?), and Loch Trool is so close it feels like it should be paying rent. The loop walk takes us about three hours, but honestly you barely notice—Mother Nature keeps changing the scenery like she’s auditioning for a travel brochure. By the time your legs realise they’re tired, you’re already back at the van pretending you’re athletic.
Easily one of our favourite spots… although yes, yes, we say that a lot. Vanlife makes us emotionally unstable like that π€£
If you’re heading to Scotland in your motorhome or campervan, add this place to your wild camping list. Your future self will thank you ππ«ΆπΌ

Only in Scotland could you stumble across a waterfall so dramatic that it somehow never made it onto any map. Most people arriving at the Woods of Cree (RSPB carpark) follow the main trail, but if you leave the car park and wander left for a few minutes, the sound of rushing water starts to rise from the forest. A small gap in the trees reveals a hidden cascade that feels like your own private corner of the wild.
Unmapped, peaceful and completely untouched, it’s the kind of place that reminds us why exploring the UK by campervan feels so special. These off-track discoveries, the quiet moments in nature, the unexpected beauty around the next bend—this is the real magic of vanlife in the UK. A perfect reminder of why we chose this life, and why Scotland continues to surprise us at every turn.
Sharing these hidden gems with those who crave nature as much as us is exactly why we have this channel, we hope you find joy in these moments and locations as much as we do π«ΆπΌπ
Exploring Scotland in a campervan has been the kind of journey that reminds us why slow travel is worth every mile. Waking up beside quiet lochs, driving through the rugged Highlands of Scotland or exploring the south. Watching the landscape shift from dramatic cliffs to peaceful glens makes a Scotland road trip feel endlessly rewarding. Traveling the SW300 and the NC500 gives you access to winding coastal roads, historic castles, hidden beaches, and the remote beauty that defines true Scotland travel. Don't know where to start? Don't forget we sell our Scotland map for only £12.99 with over 600 pins on where to stay/visit and all the facilities you need to plan your own campervan roadtrip.
Campervan life in Scotland offers the freedom to pause wherever the scenery demands your attention—whether it’s a serene Highland viewpoint, an ancient forest trail, or a windswept stretch of coastline. It feels like the most authentic way to explore Scotland, especially for anyone who enjoys van life, outdoor adventure, and discovering off-the-beaten-path locations.
If you’re planning to visit Scotland, experiencing it through campervan travel is one of the most memorable ways to immerse yourself in the landscape (in our opinion βΊοΈ) From small villages to dramatic mountain passes, every moment underscores why so many travellers consider campervan Scotland journeys to be the ultimate way to explore this remarkable country.
So let this be your sign...what are you waiting for ππ΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ Ώπ«ΆπΌ
Happy Saturday Folks!!
43 years Old, living Vanlife in a 36 year old campervan. Currently in Scotland ππ. Who said life has to be boring. To think we've been in Scotland less then a month and already seen so much. Life should be an adventure...if you agree then why not follow along on ours. Hopefully it will give you some inspiration for your own travels around the UK π«ΆπΌπ
Vanlife in Scotland is magical when it snows βοΈJust when we thought we were heading into the sunshine, we found snow instead. Parking overnight in the Bridge of Orchy forestry carpark we had the whole spot to ourselves. Some of the reviews mentioned being able to hear the road as the A82 runs not far away, however we had such a peaceful night. £13 as there is a black waste point, parked up next to the roaring river and surrounded by trees we could have stayed longer. However as much as we love the Snow, Old Gertie isn't such a fan. With her little gas heater being temperamental we didn't want to risk our luck so headed for the Drovers Inn. They are more than happy for you to park overnight in the carpark, I should mention they have an epic waterfall to view from there. The staff are so friendly and the pub an eccentric, eclectic, cosy vibe. Highly recommend it. Just past the Falls of Falloch as you drive south it's easy to miss so add it to your travel list.
One day with a better insulated campervan and a more reliable heating system we want to explore the Highlands in the snowy weather but for now we have to be kind to the old girl so are heading to explore back in the South...we might even head back to the spot we got engaged all those years ago, any guesses where?
As always lots of love from Old Gertie and the Gang ππ«ΆπΌ
We had no idea when heading to the Kinlochleven Aire that would be in for such a surprise. Firstly the Aire itself is fab, a community incentive which means all the money goes back into the area. It's £20 a night with electric hookup, drinking water, toilets and a elsan point for your chemical toilet. Parking in the heart of the village next to the water we had thought this would be a great spot to reset and recharge.
However you know us, we always love to go for a wander and on crossing the bridge saw a sign opposite the pub for the grey mares waterfall. Walking up the road the path soon changed to woodlands that trekked behind the houses. Following the path slightly uphill then straight down some steps and across a bridge we couldn't believe what we found. Hidden behind this little village in the mountains of Scotland is not only the most breathtaking waterfall but also a course of ropes, blanks and wall hooks which means you can traverse along the edge until you are suspended above the water below you, directly facing the waterfall. I could feel the water on my face! Breathtaking.
Just goes to show you, you really never know what could be just around the corner.
If you are exploring Scotland in your motorhome or campervan then make sure you add this spot to your travel plans, it's one not to be missed.
Was it worth it? Part 17 of our Campervan adventures around Scotland in our 36 year old campervan, Old Gertie.
Hiking a trail we've wanted to walk so many times but the weather wouldn't allow it...a blue sky day felt like the perfect time. Now Im sure there are lots of seasoned climbers/hikers out there who will think I'm being a wuss. However if you are scared of heights like me then I feel this is a far better review then the ones I read online before heading off.
The path is steep in places with sheer drops so be prepared and if it's icy or snowy I wouldnt even try it! However when the conditions are right, wow, this is a hike so worth the fear. Climbing around 350 metres you come to the Lost Valley. Words can't describe how beautiful it was and video just doesn't do it justice. I recommend reading about the history of this glen before setting off as it makes the atmosphere feel so much more weighted in history alongside its natural beauty.
This is exactly the reason we love exploring Scotland in a campervan. We have camped around the Glencoe area for a few nights waiting for the perfect day to make the climb, something that wouldn't be possible if you were just passing though.
Have you walked to the lost valley? Am I being a big ole wimp? Be honest, I feel the comments will only help give a full review for those who want to give it a go.
Looking forward to sharing where our Vanlife adventures take us next, we have a hidden gem that I don't think anyone will expect...but that's a story for tomorrow.
Lots of love ππ«ΆπΌ
And It's been perfect β€οΈπ΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ Ώ Vanlife Adventures are the absolute best but sometimes you can forget to take the time to just do nothing. We've had a lazy morning, followed by a slow sunny walk, finished off with a little sup on some local ales. Just what we needed, it's been lovely.
Our bodies needed the rest after yesterday's hike which we cant wait to share with you all tomorrow but for now, we've just opened a bottle of red and are about to cook some dinner and settle down to another evening of Shetland. We are late to the game so currently binge watching the series βΊοΈ
We hope everyone is having a lovely weekend whatever you are doing, wherever you are π«ΆπΌand we shall see you all tomorrow for part 17 of Vanlife in Scotland...it's going to be a great one πβ€οΈ
Glencoe is easily one of our favourite places to explore in Scotland...but I feel we've said that everywhere we've been π Popular for Vanlife and it's so easy to see. Parked up in amongst the mountains it's truly a breath taking place.
Waking up next to the river Coe was the perfect way to start the day. They've laid a new path since we were last here which means you can follow the river and all it's waterfalls in a nice little loop walk. Our plan today was to get gas as the weather has started to get chiller and we wanted to use our heater...little did we know its broken. Ouch ππ€£Hey ho, we have blankets and candles...although anyone well versed in these old gas fires, we would welcome any advice!
West highland gas is the place to go when you are up this way in your motorhome or campervan. Colin is just the loveliest chap and with such reasonably priced gas! It can get quite expensive in Scotland so good one to add to your travel itenary.
Tomorrow we are sharing with you a hike we have wanted to do for a long time but have put off for various reasons. However it's meant to be a clear sky day so we need to make the most of it π€πΌ
See you tomorrow guys ππ«ΆπΌ
Top tips if you are travelling to the Scottish Highlands in your motorhome or campervan...there are washing machines and dryers at the green welly store, make sure you take cash, super handy big drums. Which for us living Vanlife are perfect as everything we own, including bedding fits in one drum! Now we do have a shower in Old Gertie which we use however it's always a shower of need over a shower of luxury. With limited water and a waste tank then filling up, even the simple things in Vanlife take more effort. That's why we love the showers at Glencoe mountain resort. £1 for 5 minutes (I treated myself to a whole 15 minutes which felt like an absolute luxury) they are super hot and have great pressure. The whole shower block is heated so no freezing your tootsies off when you get out. They even have a drying room which is free to use so no need to take damp wet towels back to the van.
Sorry it not been such a fun day in the life today but there's always a balance to the adventure and today was one of those. Still not a bad life hey, showering in the mountains is pretty epic right!
On to find a spot for tonight but that we will share with you all tomorrow.

Part 14 of Vanlife in Scotland, 2 amazing motorhome/campervan overnight spots and 1 place you won't want to miss on your roadtrip in this stunningly beautiful country.
Scotland you have our hearts β€οΈπ΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ Ώthis road trip just gets better and better. Revisiting fab overnight spots like Loch Lomond (we park at the visitor centre) and breathtaking waterfalls like the Falls of Falloch. Then discovering new places to stay thanks to the Forestry Land Scotland, with their Strone Hill carpark. £10 overnight and £5 if you just want to use the chemical waste point.
The weather is turning but it doesn't make a difference to us. The autumnal colours are breathtaking and quite honestly there is nothing I love more then a rainy walk followed by a cosy evening in the van. Makes you grateful for the little things π«ΆπΌ
Cullen Skink was a big hit, we will definitely be making that again...I highly recommend it if you haven't tried it. So simple, so hearty, just delicious.

For those not sick of me and my voice π€£we also have a new Youtube episode going out tomorrow if you wanted to catch that, 6pm.
We hope you are enjoying our Vanlife travels in Old Gertie and that some of our tips will help of you plan on visiting Scotland.

You can't come to Scotland and not try Irn Bru. We got it wrong the first time and picked up an Aldi version which we were told and can now confirm doesn't compare. We were recommended the vintage and...well I would tell you how it tastes but people aren't wrong when they say it's impossible to describe. Touted as an incredible hangover cure (yet to be tested π€£) and even outsells coca cola here in Scotland...it's a drink you have to try.
That's what I love most about travelling around in a campervan, you get to take your kitchen with you. The amount of Scottish treats we have packed in our fridge and cupboard I can't tell you π€
What else do you recommend we try whilst we are here?
Back to our regular daily adventures tomorrow so stay posted for some amazing spots and a visit you won't want to miss!

We are sharing our daily adventures as we travel around Scotland in our 36 year old campervan. If you want to follow along on our roadtrip then why not join our little community and follow along.
Old Gertie is a 36 year old Talbot express and has been our tiny home on wheels for the past almost three years. Proving daily they don't make them like they used too. Together with our dog Frank and our car Murphy we are exploring all the hidden gems of the UK and sharing them with you.
Want to know what a day in the life has in store for us, with amazing places to park overnight and visit in the day? Then we've got you covered. We hope you enjoy the journey as much as we are ππ«ΆπΌ
Vanlife in the UK truly shines when you visit Scotland, another amazing overnight spot. Craufurland Castle Estate allows overnight parking for £10 a night which is then kindly redeemable in their café for breakfast or lunch. What I didn't add (as I seem to be making these reels longer and longer π€£) is that we got super lucky on our stay. The cafe was open for a private dinner and firework display which we got to enjoy only steps from our campervan. There's a lovely loop walk around the estate or you can also take the path straight into Fenwick, it was about 3/4 mile. A peaceful night on level parking overlooking the lake, ideal for all size campervans or motorhomes.
However it was time to head further north and we wanted to get past Glasgow which can be a tricky drive...especially after being used to the peaceful traffic free roads weve experienced so far.
Loch Lomond is one of our favourite spots, having been a place we stopped many times before. We know it can get busy in the more touristy months so maybe an idea to avoid then however this time of year it's so peaceful and calm. We were the only campervan all night. However I will share more from this spot tomorrow. I'm a day or two behind in these reels so can already tell you, this roadtrip just gets better and better.
We really hope these daily reels help you on your campervan or motorhome adventures around Scotland and for everyone who lives here...we hope we are doing it justice π΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ Ώπβ€οΈ
Happy Monday everyone!

Because sometimes it's the silly little moments that make the best memories. Today we drove through the rain to find some sunshine and find it we did βΊοΈ(maybe my singing helped π€£) Little wins that can fall into the forgotten archives are the ones we try to celebrate the most and I wanted to share this moment with you all...as embarrassing as it maybe πI hope it reminds you to celebrate every little win, be hopeful without expectation and be grateful for everything you have.
That's got to be the biggest lesson this simple campervan lifestyle has taught us and one I wanted to share with you all π«ΆπΌ
I hope you have all had a wonderful weekend and thank you as always for being on this crazy ride with us. Tomorrow we will resume normal Vanlife daily reels filled with places to stay and locations to explore in your motorhome or campervan in Scotland.
But for now...

'Ker coo bree' how am I still saying it wrong, and to think I even applauded myself πall I can do is apologise at this point πThank you to those who helped me with the pronunciation and for those it annoyed...my advice, don't sweat the small stuff π€
Exploring Scotland in your campervan really is a dream, we went from a full service Aire to somewhere so remote we couldn't even get phone signal! The variation is just amazing.
We did try a bit of cold water paddling and man alive that was cold! Shout out to all you cold water swimmers out there.
Loch Doon was stunning and the Loch Doon Castle fascinating. They actually moved the castle in the 30's to allow for a hydro project and rebuilt it stone by stone where it stands now.
However as much as it is wonderful camping off grid that does limit how much of our van life adventures we can share with you guys so we hit up our Britstops app to find out next spot. It's also on park4night so inclusive to everyone in a campervan or motorhome but I will share this spot with you all tomorrow.
For now we are off to enjoy the private fireworks display, we hope you are all having a lovely weekend and we will see you tomorrow.
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang ππ«ΆπΌ
Not a usual overnight spot for us in Old Gertie but these Aires are great when you want to explore the local area. Plus the money you pay to stay not only gives you access to electric and water, it also goes straight back into supporting the community swimming pool so a winner all round.
You guys know that when in Scotland in our lil ole campervan we are 99% of the time trundling from one epic nature spot to the next. However we needed electricity (solar is scarce at the moment π§οΈ) so took advantage of the location and went to find out what a little Scottish harbour town was like.
Rich in history there is a castle and a number of churches along with a varied collection of shops and quaint old houses. Sadly we couldn't get a takeaway Cullen Skink which is something we've wanted to try however we did get an epic haul from the bakers...I will share that tomorrow.
A slightly different stopover for you guys today but I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did BUT nature is calling and we are off...where too? Well you will have to tune in tomorrow to find out.
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang ππ«ΆπΌ
For those that are new here, we are Trist and Kez and for the past almost three years we have been exploring the UK in our little home on wheels. A 36 year old Talbot express campervan called Old Gertie. We are currently in Scotland, sharing our adventures and overnight camping spots with you. We've been in the South West of Scotland for over a week now and keep finding amazing reasons not to leave. Proof there is more to Scotland then the NC500. We don't do it like the rest π€£ We don't have a motorhome or a self converted van. Three years ago we just brought a 36 year old campervan, sold everything we owned and hit the road to explore the wilds of the UK. We are currently in Scotland and Old Gertie made it in two days driving 400 miles in 10 hours costing about £100 in petrol...leaving the south coast of England.
So if you want to know what Vanlife in the UK is like, living and travelling in an old campervan then why not follow along. We share lots of places to stay and visit proving that you really dont need much to find magic on the road!
Take it from us, if you are travelling to Scotland in your motorhome or campervan and you rush straight to the start of the NC500 then you will miss all the magic. We've been in the South West of Scotland for over a week now and keep discovering reasons not to leave. Be it incredible park ups, from contribution based campsites, allowed overnight forestry carparks or local business incentives. Or just the incredible locations they are in. We can't leave!
Loch Trool visitor centre was our most recent stay, another of the forestry land Scotland carparks. Positioned next to the most incredible waterfall it seemed only right to get wet bums enjoying a warm winter picnic. Great fuel for the 10k hike around Loch Trool. It's a circular walk that takes just over 3 hours, all around the loch right up to Bruces stone. Loch Trool was the location of the famous battle of Glentrool with lots of history to learn on the way round.
However today has been spent mostly working which meant we have run out batteries very low and without a glimpse of sun our solar just isn't cutting it. Thankfully Scotland is well equipped for Vanlife and we have found an aire that has electric hook up for just £15 a night which we shall share with you all tomorrow.
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang π«ΆπΌπ
At the end all we have is our memories π«ΆπΌ There are so many reasons we love Vanlife. None are that grand, it's all the simple little moments that create the magic for us.
A winter picnic of warm hot soup, sat on a wet bench in the rain, with a waterfall as our sight and sound...priceless ππ½
Its in the stillness between destinations, weve learned that freedom isn’t about how far we travel its about embracing the wilds and knowing you belong wherever you are.
Slow travel, small living, simple life.
P.S Taking today to just soak up this past weeks worth of adventuring around Scotland in Old Gertie our ever faithful 36 year old home on wheels, normal service will resume tomorrow β€οΈ
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang π«ΆπΌπ
There is more to Scotland than the NC500 so make sure you don't rush or you might miss the magic. The Woods of Cree is a must on your campervan or motorhome adventures or to be fair any roadtrip in any vehicle. There are two carparks along this stretch of road, we always head to the RSBP wood of Cree carpark as the loop walk through the woods and up into the hills is one of our favourites. The woodland trail takes you through the woods and past countless waterfalls but if you want to wander that little bit further and take in breathtaking views then you can add the shrub trail to your hike which extends the loop. Both signposted walks with fascinating facts about the ancient oak woodlands as you explore. However sometimes the best finds are the hidden gems you find when you stray off the well beaten path...which is how we feel about the waterfall we went too this morning. A short wander down the road, you just have to follow the sound, you will stumble across the most epic falls. Standing close you can feel the water all over your face, now that's how we love to wake up! Heading onwards we have some errands to run but where we are going next offers a level up to where we've been before...if that is even possible. In Trits words, it's spectacular so make sure you are following along on our Vanlife travels around Scotland and we shall see you tomorrow.
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang π«ΆπΌπ
One of our favourite overnight spots when in Scotland, it's a little Vanlife haven. Parking in the huge carpark at the end of the Isle of Whithorn peninsula, offered so generously by the Steam Packet Inn. A family run pub serving their own micro brewed Ales or delicious freshly caught, locally sourced food. All they ask in return is a contribution for your stay or to use the pub which we highly recommend. There is even a water point, bins, an elsan point and a toilet! The area itself is steeped in history being a key point in pilgrimages from time gone by. A must stop spot to add to your campervan adventures when in Scotland.
After a lovely meal out, a beautiful walk and a peaceful night by the sea it's time to head forward on our road trip...where to next? You will have to tune in tomorrow to find out βΊοΈ
Happy Sunday beautiful people ππ½
Lots of love,

This definitely felt like a VIP motorhome stay ππ«ΆπΌ
We left our spot at the otters pool and headed to Clatteringshaws, whilst you can stay overnight we choose not to as the winds were increasing and we needed to find somewhere a bit more sheltered. Which we found at the Red Deer Range ππ½another carpark opened by Forestry land of Scotland for a £10 charge to stay overnight in your self contained motorhome or campervan. We were the only ones all night and all morning which quite honestly made it feel like a VIP stay. Make sure you are stocked up with apples or carrots when you visit as the deer come straight to the hatch awaiting their treats.
However with very limited signal and work to do we decided to head to one of our favourite spots here in the South of Scotland, the Isle of Whithorn. Overnight parking is contribution based and allowed by the Steam packet inn who own the carpark. Parking is right at the end of the harbour with the sea all around you. The carpark is huge and hard standing which is perfect in these wetter months as driving onto grass would be near on impossible.
The Steam packet inn is a lovely little family run pub which serves its own micro brewed ales which are absolutely delicious. The plan is to head there this evening for dinner, but first a walk around the stunning headland which is filled with stories of years gone by....but that will have to wait until tomorrow βΊοΈ
We hope you are all having a lovely Saturday wherever you are and whatever you are doing!
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang π«ΆπΌπ
Well that was a hairy drive! We've driven Raiders Road before but had clearly forgotten what a rattly ride it is π A beautiful drive, it's just such a shame the road is in such poor condition, the pot holes are dangerous...especially in a 36 year old campervan. It felt like she was going to rattle apart π€£but as always, the old girl pulled it off and it was worth it! We've visited the Otter pools before when it was day parking only however this year it's been open for overnight stays. The Forestry and Land Scotland open a number of their carparks for overnight parking in your camper as part of their stay the night scheme and rotate these periodically. To be able to stay in such an incredible spot for only £10 a night was amazing. 24 hour toilets are a nice bonus. However the jewel of this stay is the remote location, you feel totally within the wilds with nothing but the sights and sounds of nature all around. We were lucky to be the only van for the whole night so we had the entire place to ourselves βΊοΈ. Lucky for us but unfortunately for you guys raiders road closes from November to March but certainly one to add to your Scotland adventures in your campervan or motorhome for next year.
We swung through Dumfries for supplies but didn't explore, we will be doing some more towns on this trip but the pull of nature has been too strong so far.
After raiders road we headed to Clatteringshaws but the rest is a story for tomorrow.
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang ππ«ΆπΌ
The views you get from your bed in a campervan are one of the reasons we love Vanlife so much! It's like an ever changing portrait to enjoy and wow, does Scotland have some landscapes π΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ Ώβ€οΈ
Im sorry there isn't a reel today guys, it's edited and ready to go however signal is very weak where we are parked up and it doesn't want to load! As soon as we move on tomorrow I will make sure I get it uploaded for you as we have had another cracking 24 hours and I can wait to share it with you all.
For now, the rain has moved in but we are keeping super snug inside Old Gertie. The blankets are out and the candles are on, snug as a bug in a rug as they sayβΊοΈ
We also have a vlog scheduled to go out tonight at 6pm over on YouTube so if you want to come along for the journey with us as we travelled to Scotland then why not check it out. We are both still super proud of this old 36 year old campervan driving 400 miles and at only a cost of £110 on fuel that's not bad for the ole girl.
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang π«ΆπΌπ
What a hike! The reviews say it takes 15 minutes...they are lying π€£To walk to the Waterloo Monument is a near vertical ascent of 175m and the path is very slippery this time of year, yep I fell over of course π The view from the top is breathtaking and death defying as the winding stairs take you straight to the top with zero walls around the edge!
We parked overnight at Sweetheart Abbey and walked through the village to get to the start of the climb. Exhausting but well worth the hiking adventure.
Unfortunately the abbey was closed when we stayed but still a peaceful night's sleep ready to head onto our next adventure. We have a slightly longer drive today, just over an hour but it's a spot we know you are all going to love.
I hope that by sharing some of these spots or helps fuels your own Vanlife adventures around Scotland in your campervan or motorhome and remember if Old Gertie can do it, then anyone can βΊοΈ
See you tomorrow ππΌ
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang ππ«ΆπΌ
Slow travel at its finest we ended up only 10 minutes down the road from our last overnight spot. Glencaple community contribution carpark allows 5/6 motorhomes to park overnight overlooking the waters edge.
We've been guilty of overlooking this spot before as we couldn't see any walks around the area...we were wrong. You can follow a footpath all the way along the waters edge for miles! It's such a peaceful spot with only a handful of houses behind you, a cafe overlooking the water and pub serving lunch and evening meals.
We chose to enjoy the elements and sat out for a glass of wine in the evening under the path of hundreds of migrating geese. We even had a solo vanlifer join us to share stories of Scotland travels...time is a priceless form of kindness and connection such an important thing in today's hectic world.
However its time to move on and we have an exciting/exhausting challenge to do which we shall share with you all tomorrow...wish us luck π€πΌβΊοΈπ

I should say, for those who are new here...we are Trist and Kez and together with our dog Frank and cat Murphy we have been travelling the UK in our campervan Old Gertie for almost three years now. We haven't stopped and we haven't left! We share all the reasons why this little island captivates us so much through amazing places to stay in your campervan or motorhome and beautiful days out we discover along the way. We are currently trundling around Scotland enjoying all the ease it offers for Vanlife and are sharing every day as we go...we hope you'll join our adventures ππ½
10 hours, 400 miles and roughly £110 worth of fuel is what it takes to drive a 36 year old campervan from the south coast of England all the way to Scotland ππ½Go on Old Gertie πͺπΌπ
Our first stop is in Dumfries,πCaerlaverock Castle Community Campsite. It's a donation based small space for around 8 self contained campervans or motorhomes with three bays and an open space. It's about a 20 minute walk through the woods to the castle itself or you can explore the wetlands where there is also a bird hide to enjoy the wildlife. Such a peaceful night and the perfect intro into Vanlife in Scotland π΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ Ώ
We've been guilty in the past of racing to the Highlands or the NC500 but since slowing our pace considerably we've found there's some absolute magic in the South of Scotland that you miss if you go too fast.
If you have any recommendations for the South of Scotland then please do let us know...we have zero plans so are taking each day as it comes and of course sharing it all with you as we travel.
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang ππ«ΆπΌ
Five mechanic visits, two new parts and almost two weeks delay...the old girl is fixed up and we are ready to start the epic road trip from the south of England to Scotland!! We decided to tackle the drive over two days and found a fab little Britstop to stay at called Bluebell Cider House. The pub is split into two halves, one side is your traditional pub and the other more a family friendly vibe. The staff were super friendly and the ales less then a tenner for two....that's when you know you've left the south π€£. The pub is located right next to a canal which was honestly just the most beautiful walk in the morning, birds singing, autumnal colours and the smell of wood fires from the narrow boats ππ½we could have wandered longer but it was time for the second shift and hopefully the final push to Scotland π΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ Ώ
We don't have any plans when we arrive, after the last two weeks we've learned better then that π€£We are just going to take it slowly and soak up all the beauty that Scotland has.
First stop will definitely be a supermarket though...you can't not have a macaroni pie almost as soon as you arrive.
Anyway, for now, wish us luck on the final push. It says 4 hours and 20 minutes on the sat nav but when you are trundling along at 50mph I feel it might take us a little longer π
Lots of love,
Old Gertie and the Gang π«ΆπΌπ
I think my smile says it all....SHES FIXED!!! πβ€οΈOld Gertie might be a 36 year old campervan but she is a little beast. As I type this we have just driven over 4 hours and she drove like a dream ππ½ We are half way to Scotland and plan on doing the second part tomorrow when we can start sharing some more exciting vanlife adventures (over problems π) I will share more in tomorrows reel but for now we are going to kick back and relax with a well earned celebration beer π» Thanks for all your support and positive comments...now let the fun begin π€π΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ Ώ
